997 Porsche 911 Turbo Rockets to 206 MPH in Half-Mile
Packing 1,600 horsepower and exhibiting major traction issues, this Porsche might be old but it certainly isn’t irrelevant.
As we welcome a brand new 911 to the world, it’s worth noting that the 997-gen Porsche 911 is now officially old. Despite this, we’re just beginning to touch the performance potential of these excellent cars. You can thank modern engine management systems and turbo technology for that. Along with the builders/tuners who manage to make all that mechanical magic. Folks like the German Porsche engineering masterminds at 9FF.
For 17 years, the smallish outfit has been cranking out some of the fastest Porsches on the planet. And their latest efforts with this 997 911 are truly astounding. Running a modified, heavily tuned 3.6-liter flat-six, this particular car produces an astounding 1,600 horsepower. With some traction, you’d probably guess that this level of power, coupled with the car’s light weight, might just produce some impressive performance numbers. And you’d be right.
In this video from YouTuber Gumbal, we get to see the mighty Porsche do its thing at a half-mile race in Germany. Despite some obvious traction problems in pretty much every gear, the 997 manages to reach an incredible 206 miles per hour in that short distance. That, friends, is some seriously ludicrous acceleration.
But it’s also a testament to how bulletproof these cars really are. Fast, tuned 997 Porsche 911s are nothing new, after all. We’ve seen plenty of record breaking machines out there, and they just keep getting faster and faster. You simply reach the point where there’s just too much power for any tire, as is the case here.
Undoubtedly, we’ll see similar things from newer-gen 911s in the coming years. But judging by how things have progressed with the 997, we’d also wager that tuners haven’t reached its ultimate performance potential just yet, either!
