GT4 RS in the works? Rumors of a 4.0...

Then, have in mind that the 4.0 does not equal to the 4.0 in the RS / R. I really don't believe they will make a 4.0, in the 981, maybe in the 718, right now the GT4 RS is in a tricky position, because 911 gt3 and gt2 rs have to come out, at least the 991.2 and then there is the 718 platform.
Now, if it comes, the spec will be pretty obvious, x51 kit, lwfw (I would imagine) couple of carbon parts, canards.
Lets wait and see.

Agreed, Porsche needs to keep differentiation between GT3 and GT4, just like the 718 versus 911... which they did with "4" cylinders versus "6" cylinders.
I would strongly doubt the GT4RS would get a 4.0 liter, even if detuned... or even if a "different" engine type/model than the GT3, which would have a more bespoke 4.0L engine.
My money is on the 3.8L X51 type of package, or a downsized 3.8L version of the new 4.0L in the GT3 - Porsche needs the displacement disparity. The existing 3.8L engine size in the GT4 has a lot of opportunity to make more power, and Porsche is not going to give the GT4 another 100HP for the RS version... so doesn't need to go to 4.0L, no matter how badly I would love to have it.

Will cost less for 4.0, allowing for greater margins.
Doesn't make much business sense to restart production on an engine that is no longer used, for use in a lower production car.
I believe this still applies to the JIT-style production that Porsche uses.

How would a 4.0 be cheaper than fitting the x51 kit from the parts catalog? What crankshaft would they get? The RS one? They would have to adapt the rest of the internals and maybe revised peripherals, and basically engineer a new engine, why do that, when they can just get already assembled 3.8 with x51 or just add the kit?

i would be happy if the 981 GT4 can obtain an additional 40-50hp - maybe someone will develop a new intake manifold. with out take headers, different exhaust, 82mm throttle body and an ECU tune maybe 40-50hp could be achievable or close.....

They are already using a brand new designed 4.0, which is a spinoff of the old 3.8 with a stroke change to make 4.0. That means it may actually be lighter than the 3.8, and the design work has already been done too, so they need to spread out that engineering cost over more cars, too.
It's already achievable, hell, even more than 450. BGB has X51 package, 435 + Dundon headers and a decent tune alone put you on the +450 side, then you can stroke to a 4.0.

The 2017 redesigned 911 RSR racecar is the first to use it, and it's moved to mid-engine for that car only. Porsche has already stated that this new engine will be used in upcoming models. Essentially, the 3.8 will be dying in favor of this new designed 4.0. The upcoming GT3 will also be using it.

based on Porsche using the detuned 991S in the current GT4/Spyder to help keep the price down, it isn't a huge leap to guess (yes this is a guess) they will do the same for 982- ie detune another engine. NA Engines we are somewhat aware of that could be used in various states of tune:-
3.8 from GT4/Spyder/991.1S/991.1GTS
3.8 from 991.1GT3
4.0 from 991RS
4.0 from RSR (rumoured for 991.2 GT3)
3.8 from 991.1 GT3 has been a somewhat problematic engine and expensive to produce- probably not a good idea.
I would love to see the 3.8 in 991.1GTS tune with the power kit being made available for current GT4/Spyder. Definitely a possibility? But dunno if there is enough torque to keep it ahead of the upcoming 982GTS- esp as the 982S already matches the GT4 when on same rubber.
Easier to get torque from displacement so I think the more likely scenario is to detune the 4.0 from the RS. This gives the GT4/Spyder greater GT credibility- which the previous version lacked in the engine department and with PDK-S, it will be the typical kind of unobtanium that Porsche offers to make us buy new cars and justify any RS moniker.
While costwise a detuned RSR 4.0 could be very efficient to make, IMHO that would put the GT4/Spyder too close to 991.2 GT3. Just like 982 vs 991.2, I'd expect Porsche to have different engines in these cars to help distinguish them and justify the various price points.
whatever it is... expect it to make you want it... want it bad
