The car's running pretty well after new sparkplugs and draining the swamp under the oil soaked 7-way and re-establishing vacuum to the transmission modulator. Next step is a smog attempt, if I can ever get time during business hours.

Oh joy... I'm currently restoring the back seat, changing speakers, some wiring etc. I'm going to put wide velcro strips to hold the seatpads instead of gluing them down with contact adhesive. Much easier if they need to come out again. I'm still baffeled that porsche used the "glue down" method to mount the seats. But before this I needed to remove all the old glue from the pads and seatwells. This was almost as fun as removing glue from the hood.... More than an hour to remove the thicker gluelayers with your bare fingers, I didn't dare to use any heavy chemicals on the old vinyl. And then more time with "label off" in order to clean the thinner layers. My thumbs are shot now but they are ready for mounting tomorrow.....

Call me lazy but I just lay rear lower seat cushions in there without any adhesive or fastening. No one is ever going to sit in them and they're just going to have to come out at some point for cleaning/rear quarter panel R&R/whatever, might as well make it easy.
Now someone will steal my rear seat cushions at the next Cars & Coffee...

Smogged the 86.5 after changing plugs, oil, coolant, ATF, checking the belt tension, repairing the vacuum lines at the 7 way splitter so it would shift, and a rebuilt MAF that I had sitting around. Passed by a country mile, not bad for a car that's been sitting for 14 years.

So I thought that I would go through and check the thrust bearing wear on my 1987 auto. I unclamped the Super clamp and measured the back and forth play which happened to be .0075” or .2mm. I moved the crank to the front of the engine block and then pried the flywheel back rearward about .002". Next went through the tightening procedure for the Super Clamp gradually working my way up to 25ft-lbs going around till all the bolts were tightened equally. For shirts and giggles I used the pry bar and levered the flywheel back and found that the crank moved. OH NO, what’s going on? I placed another indicator on the clamp face and pried again and found that the clamp/ drive shaft did not move. Took me a minute but the stupid in me forgot about the flex plate (And you know what the flex plate does). So I used my 27mm socket and turned the motor over and found that the crank moved back to the correct position. I did this twice to make sure it returned correctly to the .002” position. So anyway, I got a chuckle out of it and thought I would share. I must be getting old!

I replaced my EvilBay Blue Top 24lb fuel injectors with rebuilt fuel injectors from a reputable source and what a difference! The supposed EvilBay "rebuilt, flowbench balanced" injectors were junk and produced one dead cylinder. What a waste of money and time as I chased why the engine was running so poorly. Acquiring injectors from a reputable source (some of those sources are on this forum, e.g. Roger) saves time, arguably money, and aggravation.

I pulled the rad to replace the switch for the fan and am replacing the thermostat along with the coolant because my 85 wants to run too hot.
I of course did the usual thing pulling the rear thermostat seal and forgot to put a towel in the bottom port so guess who had to fish out a rear thermostat seal from behind the water pump
Now to put it all back together and do a coolant flush....

Doing the final wiring on the carguard alarm and stereosetup. These things takes an insane amount of time when you doing it right and removing all the old mischiefs.
Now there's only a 4th of the cables remaining...
I recently found a vintage nos blaupunkt harness to an old volvo on an auctionsite. A real gem. I am going to put in an original BQB-80 amplifier as it's was delivered with this. Fader button will be hooked in again etc. The wiring will be superb looking with these plugs, just love the writing on the cables also. Not exactly as original but very factory-looking...
For you with sharp eyes: As seen in the picture, my BQB-amplifier has a blaupunkt servicesticker on the cover. This amplifier came with my Bamberg sqr-82 when I bought it. As it turns out these amplifiers often burned some components on both output channels. This amplifier had these components replaced and works great. My original BQB which came with the car was dead. It was exactly these components that were burned out on that one. Especially a pair of too small powerresistors usually breaks. If you have one of these, check this out internally, not to difficult to replace...

My 87 was a single owner car with 93K, it had a top end done in 2013 as many of the hoses have 2013 dates. Also the MAF was rebuilt. It's all apart now. I cleaned the TB, rails and injectors yesterday. Today the intake gets it's cleaning so we can powder cost in the next few weeks. I restored a MY85 last summer and this is my new project. Interior is in great shape. Looking forward to this weekends Carlisle PA PCA Swap event for a few parts.
