On the shorter route, you can elect to just stay in Rutherford, go north to St. Helena or south to Yountville. I usually stay in Rutherford at Auberge du Soleil or head into Yountville, which is why I consider it a shorter route. There is an even shorter route, which I take in order to avoid Hwy 29, by just turning left (instead of rt) on 121 which will take you directly towards downtown Napa.
On the medium route, you can elect to go north to Calistoga (which is the way I usually head, which is why I consider it longer) or just head directly into St. Helena.
You can also make the long and medium routes even longer by heading west on Petrified Forest Road from Calistoga and doubling back to St. Helena via Calistoga and St Helena Roads.
Lots of options that I think you should leave open for the adventurous driver.

EDIT: jsullivan worked out the more accurate route (see next post). Have updated the Google Maps link accordingly...
Points further away from the SF Bay Area

Points further away from the SF Bay Area
- North
- Head east from Willows, and then take Hwy-70 up and over to Bucks Lake, back up and over to La Porte, and then up Hwy-49 to Truckee and Donner Pass - https://goo.gl/maps/G7eNGPfgiaS7mPB49 (~328 miles)
- Road & Track drove this road in the following article, and spoke highly of the Hwy-70 section:
- 2020 Performance Car of the Year: https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-car...r-of-the-year/
- West end of this route is ~80 miles north of Santa Rosa (as the crow flies)

The map graphic from the Road and Track article doesn't quite match up. Reading the text, it
sounds like they turned off Hwy 70 around Quincy to go to La Porte. The article mentions Hwy
120, but this seems to be a mistake. Google maps calls this "Quincy La Porte Road". The
article states they headed back towards Tahoe on Hwy 49. If this is correct, they went all the
way down to Collins lake and back up? Or took a smaller road across near the reservoir,
perhaps Oregon Hill Rd? At least that's what I get from studying the map:

[QUOTE=jsullivan;16263796]The article mentions Hwy
120, but this seems to be a mistake.
It it sounds like they meant 20 rather than 120
looks like they dropped down on 70 to 20 (?)
or from 49 to 20
120, but this seems to be a mistake.

Lots of great info in here. I'm from the opposite coast but will be out in your area in a few.
I've got about 2.5 days of exploring available to me. Ideally, looking for 6+ hour drives basing out of the Stanford area.
North, it seems Mt Tam area crisscrosses north/south a few times. I see it recommended here but only sections of it.
Would it be worthwhile to keep venturing northward beyond Fairfax Bolinas Rd?
Would it make sense to start from base and go south twoards Skyline and start working my way north across the GGB to Mt Tam?
Or, maybe split north one day and south the other?
The .5 day I need to get to LA, so any fun routes rather than just taking hwy 1 down the coast.
Car is on summers. Are the areas I'm referencing under snow? Google earth does show snow from road views, but I'm not sure when that really starts to be an issue.
Appreicate any thoughts/advice!

I'm in a '12 GTS! Those dates might be tough for me to get away. I've got family in for the holidays. But a jaunt through the Santa Cruz Mountains would probably be doable. Those are west of Stanford. I'm relatively local to Stanford over the hill in Half Moon Bay.
From where are you coming?

Ah, that's why the GTS is a bit beaten up!!
If a drive on Sunday the 22d works, we can probably get more folk out. We could do Skyline, or Mt Hamilton, or Hwy 25 out of Hollister. These are not Marin way (north), but maybe that leaves that for Monday!!
