Chicago is in the house! Great pics, JRK, and big congrats, Illini, on that SBM beauty.
Enjoy, guys!
Thanks SJ! Feels fantastic to be back in a Spyder
Couple more from last weekend's adventure into the suburbs, because it is the "Spyder in the Wild" thread after all! That's the Home Alone house in the background, which I'm sure the owner loves the internet knowing about...
Near Lake Rabun, GA Stopped at a hydroelectric power plant
At the entrance of Minnehaha Falls
A few pics from my Sunday drive out to the Georgia mountains. Still working on getting some more out off the camera. Georgia is just freaking gorgeous. Some of the roads were breath taking like rally driving courses. And trees were colored on both sides and there were areas where they were shedding a ton of leaves while I was driving through them with my friend as passenger as if welcoming me and the Spyder!
Some more experimental shots as I get more comfortable with my camera and Lightroom. Another one at the hydroelectric power station Minnehaha Falls. Nice little hike going up there from the parking spot.
Cars and coffee in north Scottsdale this AM... nice eclectic grouping of cars. The car next to me a VERY rare '57 Chevy fuelie with three on the tree! The white 964 to the left is a very rare Carrera RS originally imported to Japan. (on a side note, a friend/neighbor just got a new Boxster GTS last week. Drove it and it is really a nice car, but thank God I've got the Spyder! Sticker price was pretty similiar to the Spyder, even with PTS and LWB's! And the SOUND...)
The Los Angeles Porsche Experience Center celebrated its 2-year anniversary today affording the rare opportunity to take your own car out on the course for parade laps. Great turnout of cars with four Spyders in attendance -- two 981s and two 918s. Great to see the Usual Suspects and several folks from past So Cal Spyder drives.
As I was pulling in to park, a lead instructor at the PEC ran over to tell me that at one point the PEC had two 981 Spyders - one with CCB's and one without - and that these two cars were the favorites of the PEC driving instructors -- the proverbial picks of the litter -- which I thought was pretty high praise.
Yours truly:
In addition to the Spyders there was plenty of eye candy.
Best license plate winner:
My favorite outlaw with roll cage and mounted spare tire in back:
Looks like a great turn out Nick.....
Nice pics, thanks for sharing.
Ref the PEC instructors, I’ve also had the same response from the guys that work at Silverstone.
On my last visit there, the instructor I was with actually owned 2 981 Spyders, one silver one red. He was convinced these were some of the best P cars ever and was convinced they were a great investment !
Excellence: You mentioned every Porsche has a quirk, so what’s the quirk of your 906
Zwart: The quirk is getting yourself out of it! (Laughs). The 906, for its size of tire, is a lot of car. That’s a pretty skinny little tire that car goes out on. One thing that – I wouldn’t call it a quirk, but it’s something that is quite amazing – you just don’t get a chance in our modern-day lives to drive something with slightly over 200 horsepower that only weighs 1,400 pounds. And I think there is no substitution for lightness. You can never make a heavy car feel light once you’ve experienced something like that. So that’s probably its quirk.
Earlier in the year Bob and I drove up to San Gabriel Caynon Road (aka California State Route 39) which winds through the San Gabriel Mountains in the Angeles National Forest and had the most epic of drives. It was midweek with not a car on the road to impede our pace. We've been wanting to get back for another mid-week re-do and today we had our chance. Absolutely phenomenal weather and, again, no cars or traffic to speak of. We had the whole canyons to ourselves.
A 5,000+ ft. elevation change with plenty of twisties on the way up (and obviously back down):
Morris Reservoir:
Afterwards we had lunch in downtown Azusa (highly recommend Max's Mexican Cuisine at 635 N. Azusa Avenue) and compared notes on the 160 mile drive, marveling at our good fortune not only to own these special cars, but to have this kind of weather when so many Spyder friends are now retiring their cars for the winter.
In contrast I took mine to work yesterday roof down in the morning as we had 13c here in the UK, but then the misty rain came.... so it was a very damp drive home
