Default Black hardtop on silver car? Yeas and nays

So I'm thinking seriously of intentionally buying a black hardtop to go on my Silver Cab, I like the black roof combo it preserves the cab look in the offseason and there's a certain funky retro look to it with the rest of the black trim... Anybody seen one done it like the idea? Haters are invited to reserve comment☺

I vote "nay", but my vote isn't necessarily against the black hard top as much as it is against any hard top. When I first purchased a cabriolet, I was planning to buy a hard top for winter months. I ended up skipping it, and I'm glad I did. First of all, the soft top insulates you from the elements very well. I don't see the hard top adding much in terms of usability or functionality. Secondly, it's nice to be able to drop the top on the occasional warm day during winter. Finally, storage of a hard top when not in use can be a pain in the rear. Just say no!

Plenty of silver verts with canvas black tops that look fine. The hardtop lines do the 996 no justice and I only think that will be heightened by a different color.

This looks good

This not so much

I think it would be fine. The cab top is already black, right?

Maybe someone could photoshop it for you?

I have a hardtop that I bought to mostly use on the track. I've found that I use it more often than I originally thought I would. The car is quieter and you can protect your top if you know you're not going to go topless anytime soon. I use it during the winter and in the middle of the summer even though my car is garaged all of the time. In both cases I'm not putting the top down because of temperature extremes so it's nice to have that option.

For storage I have a winch setup in my garage so the top sits right under the ceiling. Can't use that part of my garage so it's a good use of wasted space and I often forget it's there.

I personally prefer the body colored option but don't necessarily think it'll look bad going with black. It will make people look twice for sure!

I vote nay. I have a silver hardtop for my silver cab, and it still looks like a baseball cap in the back-can't see with this pick, and i would think that would stand-out more with a black one. The soft-top black blends better than the hardtop due to tighter fit and seem's and has the more natural look and fit. Just my .02....

I agree. I bought a black hard top because I knew I'd never find one in body color (Mirage). I think it looks pretty good.

Would give a retro look IMHO. Or else a cross between a Mini and Porsche.

DO IT. If later on you realize it was a "bad" idea, then repaint-to-match (will not be cheap). FWIW, I considered doing this but the price tag of repainting later forced me to find a matching one.

Sell your car and buy a coupe! Just kidding. If you like the look, which it seems you do, just do it. Don't listen to everyone else.

b3's photo skills helped. I agree with most of the others that have stated a dislike of the hard top at all. I'm not a fan of the Cab lines to begin with and I think the hard top makes it stick out even more.

The contrasting color, however, actually helps a bit in my opinion though.

As already mentioned, you can get it repainted if you decide you don't like it. Alternatively you could just sell it on again and then pick one up in the correct color.

Woodman,
For a second I thought you may have "hacked" into my computer because I was about to photoshop that same car. (see picture) But after starting on it, I noticed a clearer image of a silver 996 cab. That's too funny... a lil' weird, but funny still. ha!
