I’ve had those wheels on for about 15 years now Steve. I used to have split rim cup wheels, my brother damaged them so badly I had to change them. Right now I’ve got newly powder coated black single piece cup wheels to go on her. Changing the wheels I’ve always found dramatically alters the look of a car.

Indeed, agreed. I’d not change the turbotwists on my car, they are part of the history, the patina really, no idea who/when fitted them. They do need a refurb and that will happen in time, there is some parking rash. For now they function well enough, just got four new Falken 510s fitted at a great price , replacing the cracked 15 yo items pictured, and the car is handling nicely. Road testing going well at well over 100 miles now despite the amateur engine and steering rebuild.

Worst case - if you want to keep them then use them with winter tyres.

I'm hoping to join the 21st century soon by adding a bluetooth streaming dongle to my Alpine head unit. This will allow me to stream Spotify which is all I seem to use nowadays in my other cars.

I think this cars serious winter driving days are over, I’ve seen close up what damage our road salt and constant winter rain does. Tyre guy was more than surprised to see some new and pristine steering and braking at the front, not the UK norm.

Im thinking of going the Blaupunkt route for ICE, will pull the horrible silver thing it has at the moment,

I’ve got a good Alpine head unit and only listen to Spotify via its Bluetooth connection. I’ve still got a multi disc changer from the old days kicking around somewhere but never listen to CDs any more. I recently installed a small bazooka tube behind the passenger seat with a built in amp and that does the trick. To be honest though the symphony of the flat 6 is what I listen to primarily!

Indeed. The driving we’ve been doing is without any other accompaniment at the moment. Only thing is when you have just stripped the engine you listen to every note. And watch the gauges in a paranoid fashion. I’ll get over it in time 😀.

Pleased to meet a 928 owner! Always wanted one in addition to my 968 but even when they were more affordable was a little put off by the complexity. I’m thinking that what I have just done on my 968 engine, steering etc on a diy basis represents the limits of practical home maintainance for me,

Yes, it's a labour of love - I keep a detailed spreadsheet re the work I have either done myself or by a specialist and I wince when I see how much I've spent!

I’m not sure there’s a financial return on all this but the return seems to be getting a unique car in good mechanical condition. I’m sure I’ve spent a good fraction of the cars value in the last year getting it back to reliable again. I’ve been recording my work like you, it can get hard to recall what has been done. Receipts file is now full to bursting , headed at being a doorstep sized thing. I wish I had some local pro support really, having explored that a little after doing the bulk of the initial restoration over 18 months it might be nice to have someone else join in. The impression I’m getting at the moment is that the pros don’t really want the work, not sure that Covid should be affecting the motor trade to that extent really, I’m a little tired of making requests that get ignored. Their choice, but it may prove to be a bad long term business strategy. On my part I’m now probably going to dump an extra 2.5k budget that was available for the pros into a decent lift and continue to do pretty much everything myself.

Yes, I've never seen it as a way of making money - I have probably spent the at least the value of the car on work. I see it as an expensive hobby that *might* pay for itself on the future - no more than that. In terms of specialists, I guess the UK 928 owners have Paul Anderson - six months or so lead time, but all quality work. Mine is going there this weekend for re-spray prep - again I hate to think what it's going to cost....

Yes who knows, in ten years we might have a return. Though balancing that is the anti petrol car thing, depends how long that takes to build I guess. Small warning was the other day when wanting to make a trip into London, natural thing was to take the Porsche then I remembered the Khan duty of 12.50. Wonder which way the world will go.

My next significant job would now seem to be replacing everything from the fuel tank forwards to the engine bay, all lines and the pump, means a drain of the tank. Would be nasty work on stands, hence the consideration of a pro. Sadly 6 months lead times would not work with a project like this. So, for about double the cost or so of pro work I get a vehicle lift in the package it seems.

Hope your respray goes well!
