Hello! I have a question. I want to go to New Zealand and I will need to rent a vehicle here. I have International Driver’s License from idaoffice.org, will it work in your country? What else should I know?

You don't need an International Driving Permit as long as your overseas licence is in English, but it may help.
If you normally drive on the right of the road note that in NZ we drive on the left. Many tourists and locals have died on our roads make an error around this difference! The danger is especially present when pulling out onto main highways from scenic spots - our scenery is very distracting!

Also, our police are very intolerant of speeding, and have very effective mobile radar and laser. Tolerances over the limit are small (<10kph) and even smaller (<5kph) during holiday season and holiday weekends.

All that aside, if you are an enthusiast driver our roads are a dream - usually well maintained and in many parts of the country fabulous driving roads even within out legal limit of 100kph.

Beware of the local drivers though - they are in general a fairly undisciplined lot (no lane discipline) with poor attention span and quick to take offence (road rage). Fortunately traffic density is usually low except in our major metropolitan areas.

This is from here: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/driver-lice...g-on-nz-roads/

Who can drive on New Zealand roads

You can drive in New Zealand without a New Zealand driver licence if:
  • you have a current and valid overseas licence or driver permit, and
  • you haven’t been given a disqualification or suspension in New Zealand, and
  • you came into New Zealand less than 12 months ago, and
  • your overseas licence is in English, or you have an accurate translation, and
  • you haven’t been granted a New Zealand driver licence since you last entered New Zealand.
If you don't meet all of these requirements, you must apply for a New Zealand driver licence to drive in New Zealand.

Sorry for the text size in last post - have no idea how that happened and can't see how to edit it smaller!

I'm working in Auckland for a 3 month period and I'm already feeling sad that my Porsches are 20 thousand km away. Do you guys have any "Cars and coffee", meetup or similar event so that I can see some Porsches and get over my withdrawal syndrome?

There’s a coffee and cars meet at Smales Farm business park at the end of each month. Lots of Porsches there, especially air cooled. I don’t have a date for this months one.

Thanks for the pointers guys! As far as I can see in their facebook page, the Caffeine & Classics at Smales Farm happens on the last Sunday of every month. Looks like an interesting event. Porsches are my passion but around here I see many Japanese cars that we don't have in Europe and it will be cool to see those too.

I may miss the one this Sunday since I might be Rotorua but I'll try to go to the next one!

Hi. I’m new to Rennlist. Recently bought a 993 C2 having regretted selling my 1978 SC for about 5 years. Good to be in a Porsche again! https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...5abe47e51.jpeg

First day home.

Hi Jake, welcome. The C2 looks great! I'm sure the 993 platform will be a step change from the SC, but still very familiar.

Where abouts are you based? Be great to see it out for a drive.

Sadly this thread is a bit of a ghost town these days thanks to Facebook.

I'd recommend looking in to the following FB groups:
Rennsport Gruppe
Early 911 New Zealand
Air-cooled Porsche NZ

I'm in Auckland on the North Shore (Castor Bay). How about you? I will try and make the next Caffeine and Classics

I drove the 993 back from Christchurch and while familiar with the old SC is so much better balanced. The SC was an absolute riot though.

Thanks for the facebook group tips.

G'day, am in Kaikoura, would have enjoyed a coffee on your way through. Roads here are still pretty dodgy. Thought this thread was dead - check most days & refuse to join face-palm.
Cheers - David (993)

Yeah Facebook is a behemoth that is almost unavoidable. I've deleted the app off my phone, but still need it to maintain visibility of events and use it to organise the occasional drive.

I'm in Auckland central. Haven't been to the last few C&C's but try to make it occasionally. My 997 has orange wheels at the moment, if you see me come say hi.

Have a similar dislike for Facebook but been great for connecting with some more Porsche fanatics. Hopefully doing a track day in a couple of weeks with RSG, just need to decide if it’s the 993 or my usual track toy (BMW M6) that I take along.
The drive up the South Island was a real mission, made it to the boat with minutes to spare. Roads were in a bad state but was still a lot of fun. Did the same trip in a 1978 SC that I bought from Chch about 7 years ago
