Funny thing is in looking at Lally's data shift speed and shifting in general is not what is setting him apart. The difference appears to be dominated by conserving entry speed and more gas, less brake. Lally was on the rev limiter a lot in my session with him.
Both Lally and VR shift my car much faster than I do. I can do it they way they do on the street, I have not been able to duplicate that on the track. Again, looking at the data indicates to me this is way down on the to-do list.

Well that is interesting.
Lally gains about 0.2s on entry into T8. Ott gains 0.2s with exit speed. Net result is a wash
From a racers perspective, using the two techniques at different points in a race could be extremely useful. Take the Lally method to get by a competitor in T8 or the Ott method to get a run out of 8/9 to pass into T10

Tim might be right about the new obsession, like I really need that right now.
Lally's lines through T8-T9 and T13-T14 generated a lot of discussion and I noticed this in my data. Indeed, getting the left in T8 does allow for more exit speed in T9 (frick'n miracle, I was faster than Lally in some spot on the track), but overall it's a loser because so much speed is lost getting the car into position for that great T9 exit. In real time Andy commented that he wanted to preserve speed in T8 when I asked him about his line and how it was different than anybody else I had seen.
The data below confirms that maybe Lally knows what he is talking about. I also need to stop tapping the brake in T7, that's expensive.

My contribution to the video archive, HD with foot camera. Car is 2007 GT3 on street tires (MPSS). Andy noted severe understeer - suspension was not set correctly. You will see he does some brake taps mid corner - I suspect trying to set the nose to get the car to turn. I was interested to note he is not using LFB; proves you can go fast without it....
I have some data but have not had time to fix and overlay it. Andy accidentally disconnected the Traqmate during the lap sessions, trying to check his times (from the video, first lap about 1:55, then 1:54-1:53 for the rest). My display unit is not visible to the driver, in accordance with PCA rules(THIS IS WRONG, AS POINTED OUT BY MATT BELOW). To paraphrase Andy (and this is my imperfect recollection) "That's stupid. I look at my time every single lap I drive. How else will you have a sense of what is working?"

Sounds to me like a case of someone (who may have been in a position of authority at the time) misunderstanding the rules. LSR DE's just like all PCA ones are not timed events, but we don't stop folks from using data systems that provide the driver with lap times.

There is a distinction from the event organizers running timing (as in a race/time trial using transponders) and people using data systems that provide lap times. Data systems can be extremely useful for instruction and, I for one, with PCA would use more of the technology available these days.
Official timing is not and should not be a part of PCA HPDE events. However, data systems (w/ lap timers) are currently and should be used more for instruction IMHO.

Data systems are invaluable for making distinct what feels fast vs. what is fast. I'm shooting for having a real-time visible lap timer in the car by December.
