Dead pedal, for sure.

I'm trying to teach myself to left foot brake in turns where I don't need to downshift. It's funny how stubborn your muscle memory is!

Do you use it to brace yourself?

If your seat and belts are holding you properly, you should not need to brace yourself w/ the left foot. Besides, you might need it to downshift.

No. (Or, more specifically, when I find that I *am* using it to brace myself, I'm tense - I make sure I relax it and let the seat/harnesses hold me.)

Dead pedal Karen. LFB'g is an important technique and should be learned. You can LFB and downshift in the same turn if you get proficient enough. The last place your left foot should be is resting on the clutch pedal. (I see this all the time). Learn to use your left foot while street driving for pedal feel. Practice on the track during cool down laps staying a selected gear (3rd,4th). The drill should be similar to a "no brakes drill" looking for momentum and smooth car balance.

+1 what Dennis said. You should not have to brace yourself if you are using a harness system.

Do you have a street car with an automatic? If so switch to LFB and you'll quickly develop a feel for it. I learned to LFB in my F150 tow vehicle.

+1000

LFB is a bit more difficult with modern cars where heavy braking also cuts fuel but I'm learning that if your smooth, it still works.

LFB was easier than I thought. key for me is that I rest the left foot consistently on the dead pedal before I move it to the brake pedal and than straight back when done. now LFB is like using the clutch.
