Default NASCAR, what's it gonna take (Daytona)

Just happened to turn the race on for a few minutes. The smaller race (Nationwide maybe?). Two big crashes in the last 5 laps. I don't think 5 cars finished the race. One guy's car went through the fence, and had the front end sheared off at the firewall. The engine was laying up in the stands, albeit right at the base of them..

Don't think anyone got hurt, not sure about the fans. But seriously, what is it going to take for them to address this charicature? Are teams just going to have to protest and not run?

As big an event as Daytona is, this is getting out of hand. The nationwide series are less developed drivers so its fun to watch the "rookies". It's be no fun to watch if folks get laps down because they can't draft. But the draft is what causes this mess. Race after race after race.

Maybe these two races need to be road courses.

Racecar Engineering is reporting that there are injuries. Hope not, has the same feel as Dan Wheldon's crash.

I'm following all the twitter stuff. Sounds like helicopters are coming in. Find a replay, there was a tire that flung into the stands. Not the one you're seeing next to the fence. Way up into the stands.

Ug. Some NASCAR official just said WTTE people going to various care centers and hospitals. Not a good sign. Just not sounding good.

There's a photo on twitter showing the tire from the press box. Just sitting there 40 rows up. I'm also seeing buzz about fatality.

Watching Speed update now. No reports of fatalities only that the emergency workers are still tending to a few fans.

they need to end this g/w/c nonsense before someone gets killed (hopefully no spectators did today...that was ugly.)

They won't say it on TV until they are certain. Hope it's not the case, but to see a tire 20 rows up and know what they weigh at that speed? King said it was like the Weldon crash and I agree.

Speed is continuing coverage. Just heard 15 people to the hospital, one is in surgery. Not heard any comment to the affirmative or negative on fatalities.

Just watched the post race interviews. The drivers were saying that they saw the cars wrecking in front of them so they kept the gas on the floor in the hopes of having enough momentum to ram those cars and carry them across the finish line.

I guess it's one way to race but maybe that makes the wrecks a bit worse? Maybe this approach contributed to the severity of this crash?

NASCAR has taken down the YOUTUBE videos. I am sure their army of lawyers has been activated.
