The steering wheel lock must also be removed in a Spec996 car.

I used to drive my E Class car to back and forth to the track. Until I hit a giant pothole in a gas station parking lot (couldn't see it due to the lowered ride height). That was a $6k mistake for the sake of convenience.

My SP996 is even lower than the E car. Also, while the BFG's are certainly longer lasting than the Hoosier's, running them on the street would wear them out quickly. Again, too expensive for the convenience.

I was at MSR today and another new SP996 car was there practicing (should be completed in time for TWS). This class is gaining serious momentum in TX.

I get it. I was just thinking out loud. I sold my trailer and tow vehicle (no place to keep them at my new house) and I don't really want to go back.

This sounds like a great category though. After driving GT3's for the past several years, I don't think I could stomach BSR. This SP996 is a great way to be in a quick car, a 911, and at what sounds like a fairly reasonable cost.

In the end you need to build a race car that fits your budget and has reasonable turn out at your location.
The SP996 is becoming a strong class out west... Here on the East coast you are better off sticking with the Stock H class.

I hear you Chris and you may very well be correct but if everyone took that attitude there would be no S996 on the west either. 3 yrs ago I built my car in the hope in the believe that "if you build it- they will come". Well I did and they didn't. I was wrong but have been quite happy racing in NASA and PBOC while the market plays catch up (if it ever does).

It is true that if you build it they will come... I feel the SP996 has some legs and will spread (to the point I have strongly considered converting my H class car numerous times). But, I always recommend that when you are starting out find a class that provides the deepest fields (in your area), best competition and biggest WOW factor that your budget can manage (or wife in most cases). Then go out and enjoy the ride while you develop your race craft. Once you are ready for the next step (making sure that this is "WHAT" really drives you)... Build a car that blows both your mind and wallet...

Interesting concept. In a GT class I think you'd just use their standard formula probably ending up in GT3 with a 3.6, maybe GT2 with a 3.8. You would also need a modified ECU to run that specific motor without a immobilzer but that's not a deal breaker.....

What's the consensus... start with a 3.4 car or 3.6? Do they really run fairly equally on the track?
With a roll cage and gutted interior?....

turn key ain't cheaper.

there only a few turnkey cars. would buy
grussels car by werks2
cars build by PTG when they were winning m3
fully decked out spec 911 by JWE (makes new cup cars look chep)

none of them are cheap. probably around 200,000 turn key and I mean used....

Put that into the cost and its half a 996 or thereabouts.
Bingo

There are no turn key 50-60k cups, these cars are ridden hard and put up wet

If you want a fresh 996 cup it's in the 70-80 range.

So the 1,000,000 question. Buy built or build?

I know you can get 6Cups for $50-$60k. But the operating costs seem to be exuberant in comparison to a standard 911 platform.. Or am I missing something?

After seeing how strong the PCar engines are I think my next race car will be a 996 or 997. But as mentioned I'm scared of Cup operating costs...
I'm knee deep in a cup search

I might possibly go j class 996, can't find a decent cup.

Gt3 engine with lower tire and fuel cost.

Sure, my RS is semi-gutted, full cage, race seats/harnesses, log books. Just swap wheels. Not saying its pleasant on the street, but I drove it to and from the track when I had it in AZ (and to Cal Speedway here).

A 6GT3 would be a great race car. Or a 996... There is a ton of competition w/o having the tire and fuel costs associated.
NASA is a blast!

since this is a SP996 thread....

I was just looking on tire rack at the BFG R1's; they have an R1 and an R1-S listed (S=Sprint, apparently)

is either tire SP996 approved? or do you have to use one or the other?
