that's a great idea, but tape over the blower logo.

Gutted with a cage, seats, harnesses, etc? That is cheap. You could barely build an E car with a fresh motor for that. What is the standard donor price? Sub-$20K?

That's pretty incredible longevity. Is that typical?

It's amazing what you can find using Google search- 996 engine blower? 1/2 second later there it is.
Wonder that drives like?

No. The rules specifically prevent using motors from a different model.

You can get a donor car for $15k to $20k. The large number of 996's that were built, along with the general lack of interest in the 996 by Porsche "aficionados" makes donor cars relatively inexpensive in Porsche dollars.

it really is amazing, a modern water cooled 0-60 in 5 seconds 170 mph Porsche for $15-20k.

buy a salvage car to turn into a non-titled/street legal race car and you can get one cheaper than that!

bargain of the decade.

Yeah, therein lies the problem for me.

IMHO, the SP996 offers both:
- One hell of a potent race car for the money, -AND-
- Perhaps too much potential for recreational wheel to wheel racing

I have kicked around the idea of a SP996 but I worry that it would be a little too over the top for wheel to wheel recreational racing. Even for those experienced in racing less potent models(994, Boxster, etc.) the performance capabilities of the 996 take wheel to wheel racing to another level in which safety is compromised a bit too much.

SP996 is a fantastic race platform IMO. It drives just like a 6 Cup, but with a little less motor, a little less tire, and a little less brake...all in equal proportions. Set up properly, it trail brakes just as well, turns in just as well, and has the abilitty to carry midcorner velocity just as well (within the limits of a lesser spec tire).

+996

I hit a concrete wall hard going 70mph in my car a year and a half ago. Walked away from the wreck unscathed. The car looked like a mess, but the suspension pickup points measured out to within 1/32" of Porsche's specifications after the wreck. We fixed the tub, and I'm still racing the same car.

I'd say a lot less motor but otherwise I agree. that's why it appeals to me so much

It is not always how strong your motor is, it is how you drive it! Most PCA races the are GTC3 & GTC4 car finishing behind me.

I know but still, SP996 is ~300 bhp, from what I know of 996 Cup cars they are about 25-30% more powerful (380-400bhp). that's a big gap IMO.

BINGO!

True dat. Driver makes the diff.

For fun, do it in a narrow body nervous bitch of a car. Bryan is hard to get around.

He buys donors with blown motors from dealerships here in So Cal and occasionally elsewhere. Mine was a 44k mile car that looked flawess but had a blown motor. We paid $5.5k at auction which was a steal. Most are 7.5-10k. depending. He has a proprietary relationship with a great engine builder. All the spec suspension included and then some. He just built/sold a stripped down lightweight version like mine which is actually more work for $40k...
