Default Japanese Indy 500

If you're up for some pure unadulterated sports drama...check out this video clip of Japanese television coverage of the final two laps of Sunday's Indy 500.

Takuma Sato (blue car) jumped from third to second with one lap remaining, then tried to make a daring last lap pass of Dario Franchitti to become the first Japanese driver to win the Great American Race (sorry NASCAR).

It ended in tears for Sato, but the raw emotion of the announcers rivals anything we've seen recently on television, and nothing is lost in translation.

Haha, great video. The frustration is palpable in the (what felt like) 10 seconds of quiet after he wrecks. It would be interesting to see how many Japanese folks tuned in, as I think Sato is a huge sports icon over there.

It's almost like they weren't expecting that.

That's awesome and what makes being a racing fan so great -- The passion and emotions of the highs and lows. If Sato wins that race, he becomes legendary in Japan. Being Sato, I imagine that the broadcasters had to live with a "so close" but DNF once again....

Great video - thanks for sharing it.

Those cars look absolutely ridiculous.

And they still managed to clap for Dario as he crossed the finish line. Very gracious.

Thanks for posting!

Sounded like my local sushi bar when we walk in the place
