Thinking of selling the Duramax and going with gas, mistake?

The key is an "Open Trailer". With my 2006 Tundra 4.7, I tow a 3000 Lb Haulmark with a 2900 Lb car...the towing limit is about 7,100. I bought the Tundra before I had the enclosed trailer, and I only got the enclosed because I use it as mouse proof storage. On the road I get 9 mpg...it tows remarkably well. But I confess, I lust after a 3500 duely regardless of brand.
I borrowed a friends Trailex aluminum trailer with my 2900 Lb car aboard. With this combo I got about 15 mpg at 55 mph. It tows like a dream.
With gas at $4.50 a gallon, on a 500 mile round trip tow, I would be at least $100 ahead with the Trailex....but since I only have room for one (1) trailer, and because of those damn mice, and because I don't want to go to the well and try to sell wifey on another race car expense, I am stuck with the Haulmark....I suppose I could get a $15,000 Featherlite....assuming 6 tows a year, why the Featherlite would break even after a mere 20+ years....

I got out of a 2008 Tundra and got an new F250 diesel. I'd really consider it a step backwards in towing ability and safety to go back to the Tundra. It is a nice truck if you are pulling an open trailer. I got about 8 mpg with it. Am getting 11-12 in the F250, and it isn't broken in yet. Without towing, I get 18 mpg on the hwy.
