Default School me on Fire Extinguishers???

Looking at Fire Extinguishers at the moment. Do I have to spend $3k+ to get something decent? What about the contents? Gas or?? Is there anything else as I've heard Halon is banned?
Manual or Electric, bladder or piston?

Examples of a local store:

Yes, I noticed how much less you guys pay. Wondering if I can purchase one from the US but I doubt that these would be 'shippable' with any retardant inside. Perhaps if they can send them empty and I get it filled down here. From what I'm gathering you guys still are able to use Halon, but I thought it was banned worldwide?

The AFF systems should be shipable - maybe just need to buy the presssure cylinder locally ? (an example would be http://www.ioportracing.com/Merchant...egory_Code=ESS)

Saferacer has two setups, one about $425 and another double the size and with more nozzles about $525 both Co2. Summit has a 5lb system with Dupont FE36 for $490, etc etc. Whats the best FE medium for cars?

"DuPont™ FE-36™ is proving to be the standard in-kind replacement for Halon 1211 in portable fire extinguishers. DuPont™ FE-36™ has comparable performance and efficiency to Halon 1211, lower toxicity, as well as zero ozone depletion potential. In a portable fire extinguisher, DuPont™ FE-36™ is discharged as a stream of gas and liquid droplets that penetrate into the fire area, ceasing the combustion process through heat absorption and a chemical interaction. DuPont™ FE-36™ is also a replacement for Halon 1301 in local application systems, such as modular systems.

DuPont™ FE-36™ is:

safe for people
a clean agent that does not leave a residue
electrically nonconductive, noncorrosive and no thermal shock
an environmentally preferred alternative to Halon with zero ozone depletion potential (ODP)"

Lifeline makes a 3 nozze 4L system for about $350. It is AFF, refillable at the track for I think $65. http://www.lifeline-fire.co.uk/firesafety/dealers.asp

Halon is flat out banned down here so I can't run that. The next thing I need to find out is if O.S. vendors will ship to me down here. Pegasus have come back with a 'no'. In regards the refillable systems, I have to find a brand that has the refills available down here. Wish things weren't so damn expensive down here...grrr..

Pat, just buy the lines, nozzles, cables and bottle mount from Pegasus or similar, then source a bottle locally.

Bit overpriced, but if you don't want to have to buy and ship most of the parts in has everything you need for under $1000. Also some electric activation systems on their site as well.

Where are you seeing prices on that site Steve? Or did you phone them?
What have you got by the way? I'm getting mixed opinions on the Electrical versions. Was thinking of going manual.

Price is right there on the page linked. Under the list that the kit includes. $973inc GST.

I have manual and prefer it. As long as you look after the cables, can't go wrong. Electric is nice but if things are ever bad enough to need to pull it, who knows if the electrics will be working. Flipside of that is a button is easier to operate physically if you are hurt. Take your pick!

Did you put that price up just now....because it wasn't there when I looked!! Who said I was getting old??
That looks almost reasonable compared to shipping. Reckon you'd still save a few bucks but might turn into a Customs headache. Hmnmm....
