Default Alonso extends Ferrari contract

By Pablo Elizalde Thursday, May 19th 2011, 07:51 GMT

Fernando Alonso will stay at Ferrari at least until the 2016 season after extending his contract with the Italian squad.

The Spanish two-time world champion joined the Maranello outfit last year and admitted he would like to end his career at Ferrari.

Alonso had originially signed a deal to stay at the team until the end of the 2012 season.

The Spaniard finished in second place in the championship in his first season with the team last year.

"It is a great pleasure to have renewed our agreement with a driver who has always demonstrated a winning mentality even in the most difficult circumstances," said Ferrari `president Luca di Montezemolo.

"Fernando has all the required qualities, both technically and personally to play a leading role in the history of Ferrari and I hope he will be enriching it with further wins very soon."

Alonso added: "I am very happy to have reached this agreement. I immediately felt comfortable within Ferrari and now it feels to me like a second family.

"I have the utmost faith in the men and women who work in Maranello and in those who lead them: it is therefore natural for me to decide to extend my relationship in the long term like this, with a team at which I will no doubt end my Formula 1 career one day."
I am stoked!

What? Clearly Ferrari are throwing just as much support behind El Matador as they did with Schuey. I suspect there will be a few championships in this venture if they can get a better wind tunnel guy.

I am excited!

While I do not question Alonsos' ability (never have...) I wonder about the team as a whole. I don't think they're quite as cohesive as they were during Michael Schumachers time.

On the other hand, Newey & Co. may have just be that little bit better.

I offer my condolenses to Ferrari. I love Ferrari F1 but cannot root for them with DV as one of their drivers. Wait till they replace Massa with some young hot shoe who starting making DV look bad. What do you think is going to become of Ferrari at that point?

¿Pete, hablás con el accento de 'El Che' o como dicimos en Buenos Aires, hablar 'Porteño'?

So you are implying that up until now he was sandbagging? Sure.

I wonder about the team as a whole. I don't think they're quite as cohesive as they were during Michael Schumachers time.
I think the problem goes beyond that. A while ago I read an interesting article as to how Ferrari during the 80's-90's was all about hiring "the best man for the job", regardless of nationality. Thus, they built an impressive team.
During recent years there's been a trend to "hire italian", almost to the point of sacrificing experience in the process. Hence their current state of affairs. At least that was the point of the editor in question.
