The most typical excuse when people get caught is usually " I bought the car that way". I don't think that any sort of public shaming for cases where somebody simply didn't do their homework when they bought a car is warranted. For me Club Racing is all about everybody getting to race - but in their appropriate class.
I think the increased scrutiny over the past years has been great. It makes the whole program more affordable for everybody.

I think both 13s and failed techs (cheating) should be made public.
Everyone knows the difference between being 5 lbs under weight and having the wrong motor installed in your car.
Sunshine is the best disinfectant.

Yes, I know about the DQ at the bottom of the time sheet but it could be for just about anything. My personal experience with this was the 2001 race at Pocono, my second race ever. I was 6lbs light after qualifying. Rookie mistake since I rolled across the scales that morning, with less than 1/2 a tank of fuel and my rain tires on it (Bridgestone S02s back in those days) and I was only around 40 lbs over the minimum. The scrutineers took note and after a dry qualifying on my Hoosiers, I was light. All because I was planning on driving out to the Exxon station outside the track at lunch to get gas because that would have been more convenient. Lesson learned in my case.
I can't help but feeling blatant violations like non stock gears, engine internals, and other things along those lines should face a more serious penalty.

The funny part is how shocked people are . Its a competition there are those that have to cheat and usually still loose . It happens in all sports no sanctioning body is going to change that.

I welcomed the scrutinizing.
Hell, I'm part of it (at least at other races)!
I was more concerned with people other than me touching my engine.

As a former scrut, my experience was there was more cheating mid/back pack than at the front of the grid. As least for the guys consistently at the front.

maybe an engine swap program in these spec classes would fix that
dont they do that in some circle track racing, where another person can claim someones motor and a fee of like 250 bucks.
Prefer the weight to horsepower rules. The only way to truly BOP the cars.

Or a car swap? Cars in class get assigned to drivers via lottery before each race. To incentivize well prepped cars odds are set high enough that you still drive your own car -- say, 50% chance to draw/drive your own car, 50% chance someone else's. Podium winners of first race must draw from non-podium cars for second race. If driving someone else's car, you break it, you fix/buy it. Could be fun.
