I gotta say, I just love my 5 series "estate car". Twin Turbo, X-drive, sport suspension and M-spec body and wheels. The seats are the best I've ever sat in. I've even done some instructing with it, and all service and maintenance is included. Unfortunately, I think BMW pulled the plug on wagons to America. Maybe I'm sitting on a windfall?

VR,

Has Mrs. VR driven a Cayenne? She is not into SUVs (this time I'm paying attention to your posts!), but it drives like a car, has the interior of the Panamera, and is less expensive. The S is half the price of a Quattroporte. I've driven the new one, and thinks it's fantastic.

Spend some time on BAT (Bring a trailer) .. go retro with the new ride.. ealry 1990s MB 500E? Older M5? An original Ur-Quattro?Badass 6.3 or 6.9 Benz? Alfa GTV? Original GTi?

(or just come home with a rental Minivan and tell her since she didn't want to help decide, you chose for her )

No she hasn't. Thanks for the suggestions, all!

Prius

Hey, the only street performance car that looks decent in my opinion is a Aston Marton.

aside from that, big 4x4 for the wife to keep her safe.

However, I do like the new volvo and the older RS6s.

None of the cars I posted are truly high perf/high style, except the Quattroporte. And it is extremely unlikely we will go that direction. Lots of cars are safe & reliable. Few are not ugly anymore.

I get your point , the quick look back after parking it, but on the other hand I want my wife and kids in the car that is most likely to get there and back and resist well in an impact. If the car can do that and look good all the better. There are cars that do both to some extent. Some are far better in safety some in peformance and looks. The good news is there is a good number of good cars out there.

Astons as example look great and the 4 door looks a damn sight better than the one from Porsche. It drives well for as big as it is but forget it in the MTBF department. I know you nixed MB in your OP but the Benz E class is way better in MTBF than it used to be and a comfortable well equped car. Not high peformance at all so it might be in the "she has nice eyes" cat. Benz does have some sleepers out there too.

well given your requirements there really is only one option:

400 hp 550, with sports package....just get the extended maintenance... they really cleaned up the looks of these this year much better than the weird stylings of the last few years...

She also really l;iked the E-class up to the very recent restyle. Does not like the current styling
Give her what she wants. Happy wife = happy life.
If she likes the E-class, its a great car for commuting and comes close to other new cheaper cars with similar warranty.

The last few years we owned S430, E320CDI, R350, R320CDI, CL65.
I try to buy them 3 + years old with factory warranty and low enough miles to get us to the 7 year 100K miles MB certified warranty, basically 3+ years and at least 50K miles from MBUSA.com.
The CPO is only 5 years, so I buy the extra CPO extended warranty for 2 years.

I have fixed tons of stuff on the cars, not much if anything was not covered.

I pick one in the color she likes and ship it to local dealer or fly and pick it up.
