Audi: hideous and/or bland as 3 day old oatmeal
VW: bloated & bland
Lexus: blehh at best
Infiniti: some nice choices...
Nissan Maxima: decent, but cheap inside
Cadillac CTS/CTS-V: stellar car, but very small inside
Chevy Malibu: stellar car....but still a Malibu
Ford SHO: pretty decent & fast car, but dodgy dealer service
Chrysler: you've gotta be focking kidding

That's a diverse list of choices. What ever you do, go used. The depreciation on all of thse cars listed is significant. I recently rented a Genesis and was quite surprised at the build quality, quite a stretch from the original Hyundai's in the early 90's.

I was at a Dealer pre-view when they first came out. They have done a very nice job on them, and they really upped the performace ante, even on the base model. Also, they look much better in person than in the pictures, but it won't appeal to everyone.

Have you taken a close look at the new 5 Series? After the Bangle butts, this is the one car I can see going back to with BMW. It's basically a short wheelbase 7 series with styling to match and the I-6 Turbo. Good power, with fuel economy and room for a growing family.
Spoke with a BMWNA rep a couple weeks ago, they might bring over the 535D..... more torque than a Dodge Hemi and 36 MPG on the highway.

Had the Audi, just lacks feel & some major mech issues turned me off, bimmer is a good choice but the 3 is really too small for four, they did a nice job fixing the styling fuglyness of the 5, good option but the electricals and cheap *** components are reprehensible for the cost and "quality" of the marque... I like the new mercs but you have to option them up or pay the amg admission fee...on the Lexus the is350 is a monster... I'd consider the subi wrx wagon, safe functional and fast...
Problem is if it's the wides car for the baby seat you end up having to drive it too...you better like it...

I bought my wife a Volvo S60 mostly because all of her friends that have the older models have gotten at least 150-200k miles from them and she's driven 60k miles in a year. It's a little blah on the inside, but a nice car. My sister also just got a new Jetta which surprised me with how nice it was and smooth it ran.
I really like the Lexus LS though, the short version is hot. When I have more garage space I'll add that or a 997 TT.

We just bought my wife a new Mini (non-S). Cheap, a load of fun to drive and gets great mileage. Has all the bells etc that she wanted (heated seats, ipod inconnect etc) and was a steal.
Didn't look at the S, they were 25% more and while a lot more fun to drive, this wasn't going to be a track car She is very happy with it, and it is surprisingly roomy.

I canonly speak for my wife & myself when I answer this. When we walk up to a car we drive every day for years, we don't want to be repulsed, have to look away, or say "but she has a very nice personality". We have to WANT to drive it. None of the cars I posted are truly high perf/high style, except the Quattroporte. And it is extremely unlikely we will go that direction. Lots of cars are safe & reliable. Few are not ugly anymore.
