VR...
The big problem you have is that it is hard to find any car fo a reasonable sum that is better than an E39.

In many ways, you're right. And one option is just to keep it, and spend what it takes to fix the big things that will start to go wrong with a 9 year old car.

Dave here's my $0.02 worth;
I did a gig for Hyundai last weekend and drove the new 2.0T Sonata Limited with Nav and it was a pretty nice car...but still a transportation appliance.
I've moved to Audi from BMW and currently have a 2010 S4 and it's a lovely car although the engine sounds like a hamster wheel.
The Subaru Legacy GT (I've had 2) is a great car...tons of power but skinny tires and similar fuel economy to an SUV

Dave, if you don't go for the Quattroporte, find her a C63 AMG (Black Series if possible)

LMAO! I appreciate all the suggestions, bannable or not. Not sure The Wife wants to be in a Prius-sized vehicle with our little one in the Land Of Lift-Kit F350's down here in Texas, though. She is not an SUV person, and is also not a Huge Ostentatious Sedan person (except for the Quattroporte dream). But the vehicle has to have room for the little one to get in & out of a booster seat easily, plus all her crap, plus room for my wife's gun and 6-pack of beer, etc.

[QUOTE=Veloce Raptor;8132216]Thanks. She is not averse to a wagon.

I got my wifey a Certified Pre-Owned BMW 328 XIT Wagon. Its great! Drives awesome, room for the kid with 4 doors, room for the groceries in the back. Rides like a sports car. Excellent bang for the buck with a long warranty. Cant lose with this choice!

I believe this meets all your family requirements:

Otherwise, +1 on the BMW 328iT 6speed. Pretty much same size as your e39 (current e9x is wider actually).
