Default Uh Oh! They're racing a Cayman!

Saw this on the BGB site after I caught an article talking about it. Can't wait to see the results. Anyone seen this car testing? The original article said: "We wish the team the best of luck and will just go ahead and assume the Cayman will clean up in its class."

No doubt!

BGB MOTORSPORTS CONTINUES PORSCHE CAYMAN DEVELOPMENT FOR MULTI-CAR
PROGRAM FOR 2010

(Ormond Beach, FL, USA - January 21, 2010) BGB Motorsports has
announced their intentions to support a multi-car Porsche effort for
the full 2010 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series season,
after running a limited schedule in 2009. The program will feature
the first two Porsche Cayman S race cars to be campaigned
professionally in North America. Both Cayman race cars and the team's
proven, race winning Porsche 911 are entered for next week's Grand-Am
Continental Tire Fresh From Florida 200; cars participating in the 2.5
hour event will cover roughly 200 miles, with the race's beginning at
1:45pm on Friday just before Saturday's 48th running of the Rolex 24
Hours at Daytona. The team recently completed 3 days of sanctioned
Grand-Am pre-event testing at Daytona and another test at Homestead Miami
Speedway this week:

"The cars are coming along nicely. It was a short off-season trying
to get two brand new cars built in 2 months and we made it, just
barely. So far the cars appear to be reliable and our drivers are
happy after this most recent test. The difficulty has been in
locating parts, since this chassis/engine/drivetrain combination
hasn't existed before in the Porsche lineup. It will probably take us
a little while to get them to where we'd like them to be; the goal is
to make them into race winning cars, just like the 911s were," added Team
Manager John Tecce.

Last month the team announced that Steve Jenkins would be joining
former Grand-Am Rolex GT and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge
Series Champion Craig Stanton for all of 2010. The team has also
announced that Jenkins and Stanton will be running their Cayman
alongside new BGB teammates Keith Carroll of Stuart, FL and Duncan
Ende of Los Angeles, CA. This will be Keith Carroll's first full
season of Continental Tire competition, as he ran a few different
makes in the series over the last two years before settling on running
a Cayman with BGB for 2010. Carroll's codriver Duncan Ende is no
stranger to the series, having run a Porsche 911 in the series with
The Racer's Group for the last 3 years. Both drivers are Porsche
enthusiasts and have chosen to stay within the Stuttgart family for
2010, albeit in a program that will be developing a brand new Cayman
chassis. Both drivers had more to add:

"The car is getting better and better to drive every time we go out.
I really got an opportunity to gel with the car at the latest test in
Miami and I'm looking forward to the race," remarked Keith Carroll.
Duncan Ende had more to add: "The chassis keeps improving the more
time we spend with it. I'm confident that we'll get a handle on it
and that things will fall into place."

Piloting the team's familiar orange Porsche 997 Carrera that led last
year's Fresh From Florida 200 race will be Stewart Tetreault of
Canton, CT and Guy Cosmo of West Palm Beach, FL. Neither Tetreault
nor Cosmo are strangers to the BGB stable, with each of them returning
again since the relationship started back in 2003. The team is very
confident about the pair's chances in next Friday's race, as Guy Cosmo
set the fastest lap time for any Porsche in the field after 6 sessions
of testing with a lap time of 2:00.3. Cosmo had more to add:

"The car is really good and I think that we got a handle on it after
the final two sessions. I'm confident in our chances to do well in
this race and my codriver got a lot of laps in at Homestead so I know
he's chomping at the bit as much as I am. I can't wait to come back
with Stu (Tetreault) and see how we do when the green flag drops!"

BGB Motorsports is an ambitious, professional motorsports business.
The team's facility is located less than 15 miles from Daytona
International Speedway and the headquarters for the Grand American
Road Racing Association. The team operates as a customer oriented
business, running cars under the Grand American Road Racing, Sports
Car Club of America and Porsche Club of America sanctioning bodies.

If the Caymans beat up on the 911s it will be Porsche's worst nightmare...

It will be interesting to see how this one plays out. Right now they have the 997 Carrera 3.6 able to upgrade to the 3.8 engine and they have allowed the Cayman S in at a weight of 2700lbs which is more than 300lbs difference from the 997. Should be interesting to see how the Grand Am tech department changes things around after the first race ( if they do at all).

Why? Has Porsche promoted a 911 in this series, or did Grand Am just include 911's in some form just for the hell of it and to be inclusive? Corporate highlighted any results in their advertising and marketing? I'd say getting beat up (through favored rulesmaking or purely on competition) by what else is in the series is more of a blow.

There's long been speculation that Porsche doesn't want the Cayman to be "faster" than the 911 because the 911 is their signature car. I'm a BMW guy, and even I know that.

That goes back to the days of the 914. CP in 1970, anyone? One of the two original 914-6's was crewed by a (then) kid who is now one of the guys my cousin is building one of the 907K's for. (And he managed to buy that car in unmolested form, dormant from the early '80's. It's been restored recently and looks FANTASTIC.)

Personally, I remember Wayne Baker campaigning in GTU. And that was a 4 cylinder car! Slightly before my time was Walt Mass winning GTU in a 914-6.

None of these cars really had Porsche factory support. I think Walt had Bay Area dealer support.

The effort being put into this is great. It's not like a bunch of shadetree mechanics doing this on shoestring budget. From the drivers to the crew, this is a first class campaign. Hopefully, but doubtful, Porsche will see that we want this car in race trim.

Porsche just needs to find a graceful, politic way to make the transition to mid-engine. The sooner the better. A car company built on a "no compromises" mission statement shouldn't be stuck hobbling one platform to protect another one.

Box spec will evolve to Cay spec in 10 years when they get cheap. IMO Great cars that can be evolved as far as a modern 911 if the right minds chose to.

correct.

I think the 911 will be faster at Daytona due to the power, but on tight courses the Cayman will have better tire management and may be really quick if they can stay ahead.

Hopefully sooner! We are getting started now and have Porsche Owners Club (POC) recognition of the class for 2010. Hopefully PCA will join in as well.

Follow this link to the CaymanSpec forum on Planet-9: http://www.planet-9.com/cayman-spec-racing/

You can download the 2010 rules and add to the discusison.

What are the aero differences. I've always thought the Cayman looked nice and slippery but never really looked closely at the two cars side by side. If it's a good bit more slippery that power advantage can disappear pretty quickly too.

In stock form I think the coefficient of drag are pretty similar between the 2 suprisingly.

That may be the case...but the Cayman may still have a smaller frontal area. The roof/cabin definitely seems smaller from pictures I've seen.
