Best numbers I can find.

Cayman S: .30
997 GT3: .31

Noted, those are in street form. Things change a LOT when you add wings, wider fenders, splitters, intakes, ducting, flat bottoms, etc.

Can't find any information on the frontal area for the cars with a quick Google search.

The fronts of the cars are pretty much identical so I would think the drag is the same. Carlos ran one at the Daytona PCA race against the 911s, he would know how they compared at high speed.

Porsche may not want it, but the racing series organizers determine the competitiveness of each model. PCNA will have little input, and it is doubtful that they would lobby against one of their own, despite their marketing strategy.

We are talking rounding errors since the frontal areas are near the same. I think they use the same front end dims, like the boxter used the 996 front end right up to the doors. If the frontal areas were different, there might be an advantage. Most all race cars with wing settings and other set up differnces will change the Cd by a few .01s betwen cars.

I'm sure that's a challenge, considering the 911 platform has been so developed.

Gotta love Innovation, they're having fun and it'll be fun to watch them.

Yeah, that was my point. This is low-level, albeit pro, racing. When has Porsche used this series in their marketing? I can't recall, but feel free to correct me. That someone wants to develop a Cayman is a good thing overall, company be damned.......to a point. This isn't new. It was rather exciting to see Wayne Baker singlehandedly take on the RX-7's of Downing, Mandeville, and Baldwin in a 4-cylinder 914. With various 911's mid-pack at best. I'm sure he could have done so much more if the factory lobbied 1% as hard on his behalf as they did for the 935's in GTX.

So the Cayman is in ST? Good to see Cosmo driving a Porsche again too.

No, GS vs. 997, but it is allowed to run at 2700#

GA doesn't seem to have much interest in the 911 vs Cayman battle and it's a new way for GA to get more car count. At 2700lbs. they have put the Cayman in a position to be pretty competitive, if not at Daytona, at tracks like Barber, Lime Rock and Mid Ohio.

And let's make this clear, I don't see how either PMNA or PCA care about which car wins in Koni.

Cayman and 911 are the same frontal area. It should be an interesting battle this year. A few people have tried to enter them since inception in 2006. the downturn in car count made them give in. I am rooting for the cayman's and i hope others do also. just so porsche keeps developin gthe full line and not just one car.

What about the issue with those engines. Cayman, Boxsters, some 996s, that had continued to self destruct for want of a better term?

You guys do realize that the Cayman was of around 3-6 sec.s at daytona testing. I wish the guys running the cayman all the luck.

Not surprising. I don't know anything about the team, but even a top tier team will take a while to learn the car and setup. The 997 is a known quantity.

Bryan, BGB, used to run 997's quiet succesfully. To be honest there is not a whole lot of setup difference (suspension or aero), but when you run a cayman with a 3.4L motor against a 997 with a 3.8L motor even with a weight add-on (ontop of that the cayman with a smaller fuel tank, check the regs. for specs.). I think the caymen will not be competetive, unless they change the rules in favour ot the cayman.
