I've always thought to myself

"if I go off at track-out here..."

and it's a thought I have every time I take that turn! -

"... I should probably plow a line straight off to the left".

But I know that would be so hard to actually do. The camber is so high that I'd also be thinking I'm going to just slide right off to nowhere. I'm sure it's an optical illusion, and if you could just go off straight you could get back on when the next left turns in towards your line. But damn, I sure can see how easy it would be to want to fight to get back on.

He bought the car not only for himself, but also for his son. Hey, I talked to him afterwords and he (dad) was in great spirits. He was more woried about his son than the car. I see nothing wrong with posting the video.

BTW, you know who owned that car?

Yes I do know who owned it.

I would hope he'd be more worried about his son than the car!! And posting the video of his son crashing badly remains unseemly, regardless of how comfortable you may be with it.

What's the unseemly part? I don't get it.

I've seen much worse accidents posted by drivers.

So now that the video is posted and we know everyone is ok, I'd like to benefit from an analysis by some of the more experienced drovers as to what went wrong. That corner is one that I find quite challenging myself....

I only watched the video once but it looked like he turned in early and then hit the pot hole at the apex, that threw the rear end out and he tried to save it. He is a fairly "green" driver and I think if he would have rode it out in the grass on the left he would have been ok. Guess we will never know.

Am I crazy or is that corner getting worse? Could be my car is just set up stiffer now, but I recall when the "bump" wasn't enough to throw your car around.

After my blow out there, I make an extra effort to late apex turn 5. This includes a little more lift, a little less speed, and a little straighter line when I'm on power. I actually have a hard time carrying to the rumble strips now. I've got my finger's crossed that it also means a harder time getting to the tire wall.

+1

I don't qualify for Greg's criteria, but here's what I saw: He didn't begin his turn-in from far enough out to the left, resulting in a shorter turn radius than his speed would allow. Rather than back off the gas and steer off track to the left under control, he tried to save it without going off. Lost control trying to save it. Lifted during recovery. After that, he was just along for the ride.
(and that concludes this amateur minute).

td - the bump does seem worse, but I think his line had more to do with it than the bump.

Your kid was not screaming as you crashed into a tree, was she?

Come on, G, you're just disagreeing to disagree.

Greg, here was my take from a few car lengths behind, in no particular order:

--he REALLY did not want to point me by
--he was driving his mirrors a lot
--previous lap to the crash, I saw him significantly displace that apex, which is a no-no, and go way wide at track out (big time off camber * dirty), so I backed off the next time thru (thankfully)
--that car is uber-fast in a straight line, but he was choppy in the corners
--did I mention he was driving his mirrors?
--the lap of the crash, he again displaced that apex, and went literally to the edge of the track out off camber
--rear got loose, but not bad
--he appeared to correct
--the car then appeared to suddenly get a lot of grip (as often happens in these situations) and rotate the opposite direction aggressively
