Default Track set up stock 3.2 Carrera VS. Absolute stock 996.......

In one of DE's I attended this year, it was brought up to my attention that my older stock
911 run so well because it had an "idealized track set up" as opposed to a complete stock 996, and therefore I had a definite advantage.......

I just politely smiled and walked away......

But....... come on...... can a very good track set up really make up for the over 100 HP difference?

Your thoughts are appreciated.....

Yes, track dependent.

Lots of variables, of course (mostly driver skill and thetrack in question) but yes...

This has happened for years.. Track 914s (even 4-cyl) keeping up with stock(ish) SC/Carreras, so why not a track prepped SC/Carrera running better than a bone stock 996? Heck, I noticed a HUGE difference going from my stock SC to a being a tracked prepped SC (some 4-5 seconds at WG alone)

I've got both a 996 and an " E stock 911 " and there is no question my 996 would give me better lap times than my 911 if it had equal tires. The faster the track ( like WG ) the bigger the disparity.

But ...isn't a 914 a little lighter than a SC/Carrera?

With everything being equal, (besides the set up and the HP) does an "ideal" track set up trump 100 HP?

I've had guys in new GT3's tell me we are equal because I am lighter.... it's a DE, doesn't mean spit either way. Have fun. When you race you compete against equal cars (unless you happen to own a CT Stock SC), that's ALL that matters.

I'm assuming the comment came from the guy driving the 996.... You should have asked HIM what part of the track set up gave you the advantage. Tires and camber/toe are not going to overcome the 100hp so I'm not sure what was "idealized...."

A bone stock 996 will comfortably whip a fully track-prepared stock class Carrera, given decent street tires on the 996 and equal drivers. Scott is right - the faster the track, the larger the difference in performance between the two.

If you were looking for confirmation that you schooled him, you have it. No go away and dream up another thread. This one is done. :-)

Nope. Just came up for a breath after a few hours of race prep. Just finished installing the solenoid kill switch & associated wiring. It works as advertised, and no fires so far. Now to get the rest of the car ready. VIR Here we come!!

Agreed. A track with long straights and on-camber corners (except one) like the Glen? 996 should be faster. A track like Mid Ohio? Would be very close, only due th the long straight exiting the Keyhole. Otherwise the 3.2 would be ahead IMO. A track like Barber? Probably the 3.2 would have a slight advantage.

Gotta disagree with you here, there's no way a 3.2 is close to a 996 at Mid Ohio. Although closer, the only reason a 3.2 beats a 996 at Barber is due to the driver, not the car.
