i saw them measuring at the flag station at the top of the downhill so I lifted every time I saw the guy point the gun at me.

I did the same, although I wasn't racing......
It kind of sucks to receive a black flag for questionable measuring methods.....

I think that was a radar gun. I've never seen a dB meter like that. If it was that's a dumb spot to measure sound because of the bridge supports and tunnel effect going under the bridge.

It was, the sound readings, I was told, were on the inside. Their sound meter is some sort of kit from Radio Shack hand built in 1967...

going under the bridge is not unlike the tunnel at Monaco...you've heard that on TV I'm sure.

It would be pretty funny if we could get the flaggers to carry a special flag that means "warning - sound meter up ahead"

[QUOTE=chrisp;5372635]This may have been the first event of the year that they measured sound, or at least the first where they were very stringent...that's what I heard from some of the folks in the know.

probably so, but in hindisight, I don't really think that they were that strict. It looks to me like they went out at mid or early day, slapped a bunch of wrists and then let it go for the races. If they were really out there, I'd have been black flagged during the race, for sure. Pulling a few baffle plates out of my trapp had no discernable effect. I think that they were just trying to get us to comply, but could have really ruined our weekend if they wanted to. We should thank them for cutting us a break.

I don't think so, I heard that they were measuring from two distinct locations, and from both sides of the track. I still don't know where they were.

They were definitely measuring there, I confirmed with one of the corner workers at that station.

Worse than that, is that I hear that for a slightly higher track rental fee, you can run an unmuffled event. Why PCA doesn't take that option is beyond many of us, becuase many more cars would come out. This event was a pretty sparse turnout the way it was. Is that true?

I was just down for the day as an excuse to get out of the house and go for a ride, but it seemed to me compared to last year there was a significant drop in turnout just from what I could see.

They were opposite the overpass flag station gums. Not sure what the idea was, but I was emphatically told that if I got a second infraction I was gone, and that was the practice before qualifying. It essentially ruined that run for me and I kept wondering when the axe was going to fall. I'm at 6200 RPM at that point, lifting isn't an option, nor is earlier short shifting into 4th (which I normally do right there). My guy (Dan Jacobs) hammered a baffle into my tailpipe and we crossed our fingers. At Watkins Glen i'm running open pipes and earplugs..

That was my perspective, too.

The first reading I saw taken was under the start finish tower -- sound guy stood right under it.
