Has anyone here used the Toyo R888's yet?

I am on my 2nd set of R888.
I shaved the first set, and started the current set full tread. The shaved set felt a little more stable, but the difference is not nearly as big as shaved vs. full tread RA1's.
It's noticeable under heavy braking, while I can't feel any difference in corners.
As M3 Pete mentioned they heat up quite a bit. I had trouble with them when it was ~100F at VIR. They were much happier in November and December.
I got 30HC out of my shaved set before they were down to the cords.

I have a set of take offs from greg's guy that I haven't mounted. I probably won't sell them with the car, so I'm looking to get rid of them. And I have 2 BW take offs too.

I love the R888's. Have not tried them shaven yet since I drive to the track. In FL used to be a MSPC fan since they liked the heat, but now with the 997 I can't find any MSPC's in the widths that I like. They are also the most stable tire in the rain if you drive to the track (rain is guaranteed if you drive to the track in FL summers). Lap times are same as I used to do on MSPC's, maybe a second faster around Sebring then RA1's, and they wear like steel

Dave, I haven't run the R888's, but I have run the Nitto NT-01's. I loved that tire. Definately needs to be heat cycled and it's squirmy at full tread.
I haven't run them on the 996, but on the 944 Turbo I actually went to a smaller width because of the tire wall stiffness. In my experience, when you get them slippin' and slidin' around in the 40 lbs hot range is when they were the best. This on a 3034 lb car with driver and 220 HP.
Supposedly the NT-01 is the same tire compound as the R888.
Admittedly my fastes TWS time is in the mid 1:58's, and I know you could do better with the same car, but I feel like I was getting the most I could from the tire.
Which race are you doing?

A friend of mine ran full tread R888 on an SM and said they had a lot of tread squirm. He only ran on a set of shaved R888's for a short session and thought they felt a lot better but didn't have enough time on them to compare to RA1's.

I ran them all last season and I can say confidently that they are an improvement over RA1. Although they took the same amount of time to get broken in (6 sessions) if you run full tread, they are marginally faster (few tenths) and last longer as well. I don't know how they pulled that off, but they did.
My only complaint was that they didn't laterally stiffen the sidewalls, it appears. So I was wearing the outside edges on my rears just like on the RA1's. At first I was worried and disappointed, but then when the tires just kept going without cording I quit complaining. I ended up getting a couple more days on the rears versus the RA-1.
Definitely getting them again!

I used 3 sets of R888s last year on my GT3. 245-40-18/305-35-18 and 255-35-18/315/30/18 combos. The tire is great! Turn in is solid (but not quite as good as MPSC or Hoosiers). Has a very nice slip angle and tire gives a lot of feedback. Noisy as crap on the street, but who cares! I ran them unshaved and got 30+HC until the were corded. Switched the fronts left/right and they performed fine. First few laps they were a little shaky until the rubber eased in to going the reverse direction.

love R888.
i run them full tread. even at full tread, i post faster times than my 4/32 shaved RA1.
i find the turn in excellent, no prob with soft sidewalls, in fact, i never had prob with softness of RA1 either. i dont find mpsc turn in any better than R888 or RA1, but i like to run toe out up front.
6 sessions to get the tire to really grip when they are full tread, brand spanking new.

Any thoughts on the Nito NT01 which seems to look a lot like the R888?

I'm on my 3rd set (944turbo soon to be about 450-500hp crank) and I like them. I also drive them on the road and don't mine the noise/ride while loving the grip. I'd like to try the Hoos etc just for the ultimate DOT tyre but I think if we use the '2 liners' like Hoos, 710's, BFG R1's etc that we just get chucked into an open class against GT3/2's on slicks. What is the main difference between the '2 liners' and slicks?
