I don't know what the scale is. In USTA tennis, there are definite guidelines that rank one from 2 thru 7. Up to 5, it is the ability to hit certain shots (topspin back hand, etc), 5 is club pro, 6 is traveling pro, 7 is Agase.
The closest thing to a rank is what the instructors at Bondurant do after the 3 day advanced road racing course. There, they say that they use a 1-5 scale, 5 being able to drive formula 1. Since they see some of the Nascar guys there before road events, they say that Tony Stewart (reigning champ the year this was said) was a 4.2. In my class of 8, my score of 3.5 was the highest rating.
On a 10 point scale, I guess that makes me a 7, which I think is about right.
I have ridden with some top professionals, and they are definitely much better than I. When compared back-to-back (my Elise 190R, Gingerman, he did 3 laps, I did 3 laps) that translates into 1.5 seconds slower than the pro. That gap would grow alot if it was in the rain, where I would drop my rank to a 5.
Does that jibe with your purpose? AS

I'm probably at the bottom of the heap someplace
Honestly, I don't have a clue.
However, if F1 driver skills = 10 then those on this poll who rated 7 and > I humbly![bowdown](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/bowdown.gif)
P.S. The average PGA tour pro could give the average amateur scratch golfer 3 strokes a side and then beat him handily. I'd imagine that a similar analogy could be drawn between F1 drivers and the advanced amateur drivers on this forum. If F1 = 10, then ratings for most on this forum are likely < 5.

A small anecdote about F1 skills: You'd think Michael Schumacher would be the fastest driver in pretty much any car at Ferrari's own Fiorano test track, right? Sure, he holds the F1 car record there...
However, Ferrari's primary test driver, Dario Benuzzi, is actually faster than Schumi in production Ferraris.![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
F1 skills are applicable to F1 only, IMO...

$1 says this thread turns into a humble contest.
I agree Dave, they might be the best at what they do, that doesn't make them the best driver period though.

I gave myself a 6 for many reasons. Mostly due to not having as much experience as I would like. I also have a bad habit of finding comfort, then fail to really push push push never really getting myself out of that comfort zone.
I am not sure if one can progress above an '8' until the point where that person starts club racing, wheel to wheel, door door.
What defines a true pro is in racing situations, again, I feel, where one is forced to apply racecraft in experimenting with alternate lines to find grip, defensive / offensive driving, etc. Also, one who can give accurate and consistent feedback in efforts to change a cars setup to optimize it for that day, at that track. I would think it quickly becomes a race of minds, not so much machines.

I don't know where Sunday Driver is going with this, but my initial thought was 6 or 7. But then I thought, if we're including all the dumbasses on the road, I'd say that all on this forum are 99% better than the general public in terms of driver, awareness, reflexes and the ability to avoid an accident. If an F1 driver is a 10, is an indy, or Champ car driver a 9.7? NASCAR, 9.2 or ar they 10s.

Pretty much the same thought process i went through when I came up with my rating. It would be interesting to do another poll where we limit the 1 to 10 range to DE and race drivers.

I put myself at a 6...there is A LOT that I still have to learn and MANY scenarios I have to be in before I think I can say I am even over a 6...I see this chart, similar to dB ratings, as having an exponential increase per every level up...a 1 may be close to a 3 to some degree, but a 4 to a 6 would be seemingly worlds apart...
I would think that the people who are 8s should be able to put themselves in nearly any aspect of motoracing as even F1 drivers are still worrying about how to find that .1 that they lack...obviously, you could be running .3 seconds or a whole second behind them and not look like your going that slow or you are out of place...as for 9 and 10...well, Ill put Schumi at 9 and Senna at 10...I feel Senna was one of the only drivers ever to acutally max the potential of an F1 car...

That is an excellent analogy. It is pretty easy to put yourself within 3 seconds or so of truly excellent drivers, even pros if you have the same hardware, but God is in those last few seconds . . .

I don't think you can compare driving skills in general.
It is very different to drive a car from A to B in regular road and traffic and to find the last tenth of a single track lap.
First situation, the goal is to maximise security and comfort.
Second situation, the goal is to minimise a lap time.
In my own case, I think I'm a good driver in regular driving condition but a very poor pilot on a track.
At least, I have a lot of fun on a track, and that is the most important for me.
