Default OT: Ford stops selling new 6.4L flame throwing diesels....

Ford Motor Co. has ordered dealers to stop selling the new Super Duty pickup with the 6.4-liter diesel engine and is recalling more than 37,000 of the 2008 F-Series trucks after reported tailpipe fires in the diesel version of the pickups. Their fix is for you to pull over and wait while it cools down. Honest!

Glad I have the trusty old 7.3L power stroke. Worst thing I have to worry about is the cam position sensor going out some day. And I've already got a spare in the glovebox...

Yes. We also have one in our glovebox.

The only other real issues with ours was that the starter died at like 60k miles. That annoyed me. We've also had an exhaust leak which wasn't fun one towing trip because it sapped power from the turbo. Still, WTF is up with Ford and their new diesels? The 6.0 started out a disaster and it sounds like the 6.4 is starting off worse!

Don't get me wrong, I like Fords and have 12 of them (250 Econolines) on the road. Still that old acronym Found On Road Dead comes to mind.

ECU F/W update is straightforward and not uncommon. My wife's 05 6.0L had a ECU update to run the injectors for ~30 seconds after you shut the car off (helps keep them cleaner with ULSD and/or low cetane fuel) during it's last shop visit for oil change.

FWIW, I would expect all the big 3 diesels to have 'teething pains' with ULSD and new diesel emission standards over the next year or so.
Dodge is supposed to have a urea cartridge/tank on their next diesel which will help reduce emissions/particulates; something that has never been deployed before.

Cetane boost is now almost mandatory on EGR equipped diesels (in order to prevent "clogging/sticking" leading to a CEL. The 6.0L has a single EGR, newer diesels will have up to 4 (the 7.3L had zero, since it was built before the EPA got involved with helping diesels).

Keep in mind International build the diesels for Ford. The are currently not real happy with each other and both have lawsuits against the other. International runs the same engine but uses different software and setting and does not run the engine over 2800 RPM while Ford allows ~3600 just to get more "HP". HP sells on commercials not Torque. The 6.0L was either great or terrible. I have 4 of them and 1 has been a big problem.

Same here. I have a 2004 6.0 and just had a major issue with it. Lucky, it is still under warranty (100,000 miles) and only cost me $100.00 deductible. Ford rebuilt the turbo and removed the intake manifold and cleaned out some crud that had built up inside because somehow oil and water were mixing together somewhere When I went to pick it up I asked the service manager why this happened. His answer was "Hey, it's a 6.0 ". Next, I asked if my troubles were over and then he said "I'll tell you this right now...don't keep it past 100,000 miles, it gets expensive real fast!

I plan on keeping it till the 100,000 miles and then get the Toyota as well. The wife and I already test drove one about a month ago. The salesman drove it off the lot, turned off the traction control and punched it from about a 20 mph roll and it FRYED the tires

Too funny! In December 2006 I ordered a 2008 F450 PSD. After waiting for two months and reading more and more bad news from http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum169/
I pulled the plug and canceled my order. I then quickly searched for a 2007 F350 Dually PSD Tow Boss, found one put a deposit on it and am going to pick it up on Tuesday.

Full Of Retarded Designs...My F350 6.0 ate a turbo and head at around 20,000 miles....also lost a tranny at 33,000 miles...No issues with my Dodge Hemi 2500 at 35,000 miles. I think F has some issues with Navistar. The 7.3 was fairly good...We ran one to 125,000 miles with nothing other than a few electrical gremlins.

2005 F-350 DRW 6.0 purschased new.
62,000 miles
2 sets of head gaskets
1 set of heads
1 oil cooler
Seems like every 6.0 needs a turbo sooner or later!? I'm guessing that is what goes next. I will not be keeping the truck past 100,000 like I originally intended.
