Mercedes has a young hot shoe they want in the car (Kimi Antonelli) but he’s only 17 and in his first year in F2. There was talk of putting him in with Russell next year but it’s best to let him season longer in F2.

Antonelli is reportedly the next Max Verstappen so they are keen to get him in but it will probably be for the new formula in 2026. This all points to the fact they have little confidence in Russell being the long term team leader. In fact, if Sainz comes in and shows Russell how to drive his car, it could spell disaster for George.

Antonelli is currently 9th in the F2 championship , i highly doubt he’s ready for F1 until 2026 at the earliest … there are already many young talents waiting for a chance to prove themselves at the highest level, not all will get that chance !
