Some of these top speed claims seem a bit optimistic, IMHO. Bill Gilbert, an extremely competent instructor in NNJR, runs a similar S2 as Zman, and he only hit an indicated 120mph everytime I rode with him. A few years ago I hit just over an indicated 120mph in my 968, and I was running low 2:20s to verify that my turn-in speed at turn 1 was more than adequate. I was full throttle from turn 1 to the end of the esses. For another data point, I was driving a stock 993 doing ~2:17s, again full throttle from turn 1 to the end of the back straight, and I saw an indicated 140mph. While some of these sick modified cars like Rick DeMan's will surely yield impressive speeds at the end of the straight, some of the stated speeds in stock cars are most likely lower than indicated.

That said, I'm fairly certain that I've reached 120 there, since that's top speed in 4th and I was bouncing off the rev-limiter.
Mmmmm Cup Car..... I do miss seeing that car zooming around the track too!
Dave: yes: the dry day at Lime Rock was after my spin, so I was a bit slower, but only slightly.

Remember that at these speeds to gain 3 seconds takes a huge speed increase. 120 for 2:20's and 140 for 2:17's may not be off by much. My best times are 2:13 2:14 and that is past redline in 5th gear on the back straight. 150mph actually is very reasonable. I'll have to see if I can figure out how to mount a GPS in the car.

My personal rule is to add 3+ seconds and deduct 8+ mph from any lap time / top speed claims that I hear, either at a race track or on the iNTaRWeB.
I've found that it's much cleaner to simply say "well...I haven't had it over 195mph yet...".

I don't really know for sure what my top speed was on the back straight at the Glen (paying too much attention for when the braking zone comes up!) but, with quick glances at the tach (easier to see than the speedo in my 930), my "best" was at ~6500rpm about one or two seconds before the braking zone. I kind of "screw myself" on top speed for the back straight because I don't go full throttle at turn two. I guess I'm just too afraid of losing it in the Esses with the Ecsta street tires on the car so I back off so I go about 2/3 throttle (maybe 3/4) through the Esses then go full throttle as I exit the Esses. I hope that my 930 has some kind of rev limiter because I've hit it (or what felt like it) at least once on that back straight.
My best speed in my Audi A4 was around 105mph, I think. I believe I exit the Esses in it at ~100mph at full throttle...not bad for a stock A4, though.
Back to the 930...what is my speed if I'm at 6500rpm with 16" Fuchs (245/45)?
No...the car wasn't stock at the time. Headers, intake, exhaust, and 1-bar boost spring the last time I drove The Glen. I've never gotten an accurate dyno reading on it. Doh!

Last time I looked my top speed was 138 about a second or two before hitting the brakes and my best timed DE lap was low 2:17. I brake earlier during DE (but still later than most).
You can cut your lap time significantly by better braking at the Glen. There are more than 10 turns and you cut a second easily by gainning 1/10 at each corner.
I had tons of fun running with a friend of mine who drove a stock 964 (C2) with nice suspension setup at the Glen last year. He was doing a great job in braking and maintaining speed through the turns.
I can pull on him on the straight but he catches up in the corners.
I'm sure his top speed was not that high but his lap time is very similiar to mine. I need to upgrade my US M030 to really get away from him.

Hi DrJupeman-
Uh...I'll have to look up the gear ratio and final drive. I don't know what they are! As far as I know, though, they're stock.
I'll do a lookup on-line. I'll post the numbers if I can find them.
Thanks!
Adrian

Hi again,
I found a couple of pages online that might be the correct ratios for what I have. The caveat is that it's based on one thing that was consistent between the two pages- the Final Drive ratio. And that it was on pages from UK-based sites. Were different gear sets used between the US and ROW cars for the 1987 model year? How about between different designations of the Turbo? In one of them, it lists a "911 Turbo with Sports Equipment" and the other lists "911 Turbo - 1978 to 1989."

Gear ratio - 1st gear 2.2500:1
Gear ratio - 2st gear 1.3043:1
Gear ratio - 3st gear 0.8928:1
Gear ratio - 4st gear 0.6250:1
Gear ratio - reverse 2.4375:1
Final drive 4.2220:1
Thanks!
Adrian
PS- The tires were 245/45R16 Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 on Fuchs

Adrian, I am assuming you were still in 3rd gear at 6500 rpm. If so your speed was ~127mph (there is some error in that the tire is not as perfectly shaped as the specs suggest, etc). This speed sounds very reasonable to me for your car based on what you describe is your approach to turn 2.
(Fwiw, 4th gear at 6500 rpm is 180mph with that gearing...)
Also, it is fun to see that you are NNJR and a TracQuest guy. I hope to see you at the track at both kind of events!

Is the Glen hard on brakes? I have never been but that's about to change. My points of comparison are Lime Rock, Pocono (long course), Summit Point, and the Jefferson circuit.

The Glen was hard on my A4's brakes...ended up having to replace one of the front calipers (it siezed), I think both front rotors (one of them definitely), and, I think, all of the brake pads.
My 930, on the other hand, fared pretty well...at least compared to, say, MidOhio. I needed the brakes bled at the end of the 2nd (of three) days. Fortunately, the brakes went to mush on the cool-down lap and not during the session!

I guess it would depend on what car you are driving, how much it weighs and what brakes are on your car. My 3000lbs 930 with the big red upgrade generally gets about 1500 miles to a set of front brakes at The Glen and rotors once per year or so.
