Z Man.

It used to be really hairy and exciting before the days of the bus stop.

Having to decelerate into the outer loop...............

My heart rate goes up just thinking about it.

I miss it.

Geoffery,

Your 89 930 I assume. What kind of rwhp are you making? Thanks.

My DL-90 has indicated a Vmax of 155 before the busstop but nobody seems to believe it
I dont have a problem with that.

My 914/6 runs out of gear at 142, and John is always in my mirrors

I top out in fifth a bit before the bus stop though....

Mike,

545rwhp and a short gearset 5spd with a max speed of 175@7000rpm in 5th. The Glen is absolutely wonderful for this car.

Geoffrey and all,

Thanks. I knew something large had to be under the hood. As a novice DE'er and spectator at the Glen, I'm guessing a sub 2:00 lap?? Is my guess close?

Out of curiousity what will a well driven GT3R Cup car hit on the back straight. I recall they lap maybe in the highest 1:50's, lowest 2:00's.

Lastly, a saw a 962 last year at the Vintage races at the Glen lap about as fast as I've seen...I thought I timed him in the highest 1:40's. Was I dreaming? Any guess as to his back straight speed?

Mike, if the 962 was driven right high 1:40s is right on.

I'll confirm the 130-ish in my 968 Engined 944. Are you in 5th at this point? I have the stock "S" 5-speed gearbox with the short gears (as well as the NA's brick aerodynamics) and am really sucking wind as the shift to 5th puts me out of the powerband about halfway between 4 and the bus stop.

LOTS of lift at that speed - she's about ready to take off.

Indicated 168 in slightly modified 996TT on slicks. Actual probably 162-163.

DL-90 confirmed 153 in my 'street' 944 turbo. (370rwhp).
I did get to see 140 in a snow squall once! Very entertaining. I was suprised at the grip - it was the lack of vision that capped the speed that day.
BTW - 155 at VIR.

I'm curious how the DL-90 measures speed. Is it a frequency with known wheel diameter (what all the higher end stuff uses) or something else?

Thanks

If you are racing in the usual I class pack at the Glen, you'll see WAY more revs when you are in the very considerable draft than when you are on your own. In I class cars you are flat from turn 1 all the way to the bus stop.

When by myself, I'm usually bouncing off the rev limiter in 4th before braking at the bus stop but if behind one or even better, more than one car, the major draft through the esses and down the first part of the straight results in so much more momentum that you have to shift to 5th as you pull out of the draft and attempt the late braking pass.

This is one of the best parts about the Glen. The other place the draft is a real factor (in I class anyway) is down the front straight.

I've also noticed that my 924S, being a little skinnier, seems to benefit more from the draft than those wider guys.

The DL-90 uses two methods - a frequency count from a wheel (programable input from speedo pick up) and a differential GPS signal. both are pretty accurate with the GPS looking better at higher speeds.

My understanding is that the weel speed input to the DL-90 is not active in the software yet and will not replace the GPS speed measurement. It will be used for slip measurement only, not wheel speed.

Yes: the rear gets real light on the upshift to 5th -- once I did the upshift when I was not quite straight coming out of the esses. Car got a little funny. Like I said, ONCE (and only once) did I do this!

Eugene: was the outerloop without the bus stop as scary as the front straight at the Bridge?
