Comparatively I'd have to say the Glen is hard on brakes. Its a "go fast, brake hard, go fast, brake hard" kind of track.

As I mentioned in an earlier post I am going to the Glen this coming week. I want to get the inside line on directions if there's anything special I need to know. I am trailering up there and don't want to get stuck on hilly or real local roads.

I am leaving from Stamford, CT Tuesday afternoon.

Should I just follow the directions on the Glen's website or is there a better route?

Sorry to hijack this thread but I didn't know where else to turn. Thanks.

Chris,
Take 84 west over the newburgh bridge to 17, then 17 all the way through Binghamton to
Elmira. In Elmira go north on 14 right to Watkins Glen. Pretty easy with the big hills being on
17 prior to Binghamton. This from memory so still check a map but 17 to Elmira then 14 to
the glen is it. Have fun.

Fresh data (last weekend). Just touching 140 but probably 138 indicated. That is 5th gear, 65-6700 RPM, 305/18 Hoosiers turning 2:10/11 laps consistantly. The laps that I got a good launch out of turn 1 and flat out through the esses would almost get me to red line in 5th. My tach is about 300 under the light from the DME.

At the race last weekend - My data acquisition recorded a top speed of 172 at the end of the backstraight.

Norm, Sorry but you are not a good data point. 172 geez my car could not do 172 on the Bonniville salt flats. The longest straight I have ever raced was Sebring. Maybe 150 there.

Hopefully this type of data will help dispell some of the top speeds claims. 2:10 is pretty honking fast and you "only" have a top speed of 140. I rode in a 914/8 a few weeks ago that was doing in the 2:06 range, and his top speed was in the 146-147 range.

ngoldrich, what lap times did you run? At 172, I would have to guess you are in the 1:55 range.

I'm with Pesky and Bill. I can just touch 140 if turn one is perfect and I don't scrub to much through the esses. My best lap time at the Clash was 2:14.7.

Norm,
Only 172??? Was your car running right? Maybe we need to crank up the boost some. Of course compared to the Lola that was like a cruise down the freeway.

I saw 140 (indicated) in my street car 993. Probably was closer to 135 or less as the speedo is pretty optimistic. Bill's car has a lot of drag with the RSR EVO body work, it probably gets to 140 pretty quickly but the rate of acceleration decreases dramatically due to all the splitters and wings, and intakes, etc.

Greg,

The RSR body work may have more drag but it is faster "racing". People let you by when they see that front splitter in their mirrors. The RS body work got no respect so I had to jump the curbs to get by.

Pesky, this was the first time I drove this new car at the Glen - my 6th time ever driving the car. I had been to the Glen 2 or 3 times in my life before. So all pathetic excuses aside, I should indeed be at 1:55. But my sorry slow butt only managed 1:57... Next time I should be around 1:54-1:55 since I will start with some comfort level and proper shock setup.. I had to dial out some serious front end bouncing this trip...

Gregg, my boost was reasonably low #3 out of 6. No point in cranking it higher until I am faster everywhere else...

This car handles wayyy different than my CanAm car did at the Glen :-)

ngoldrich, no excuses required...1:57 is still ridiculous fast.

I also agree with Pesky that this should hopefully dispel some of the Glen Top Speed myths. In my (dearly departed) GT3 Cup last year I think my calcs were that I was in the high 140's running 2:07ish. Only Roy Chong was faster from turn 1 through the esses at at least two events. Roy runs around the 2:00 mark, if I recall.

I'll be in a "street" car next time I'm at the Glen. We'll see what my 380rwhp turbo turns on the tach...
