Toyo RA-1 DE question
#4
I love RA-1's as a DE tire.
They are predicatble, forgiving, nearly as quick as Hoosiers except you can drive them anywhere on the track, seem to be almost totally unaffected by heat cycling, wear very well, and are great in the wet at full depth... Oh, and they are relatively inexpensive (especially as compared to Michelin and Hoosier.)
Really hard to beat for DE... Use 'em full depth and drive to the track.

Work well ware long and you can drive them to and from the event. Provided you don't do some thing stupid at the event
I'm on my second set. Did about 12 track days 12 autoX's and street driving to the toon of about 7,000 miles. Still had usable rubber but was starting the next season and need better wet and didn't have spare set of rims. I hated to get rid of them.
Some 911 drivers feel they are a bit numb when full tread but they get better as they go along.
As they say if you want grip to the max then Hoosier or Pilot Sport Cups.
Very good DE tire.

Best tire out there! IMHO! For the cost of Hoosiers and the lack of life in them I run RA's. I race for fun and it makes no sense to me to have Hoosiers at the cost they are for out of pocket fun. Sure I can gain a LITTLE more time but what am I going to win....nothing, well ok a ribbon perhaps and an EGO boost.
If I were "dashing for cash" then I would go with Hoosier for the better adhesion. Dal

I think Toyos are the best DE tire as they offer the best combination of longevity, grip and price. They remain very consistent all the way to the point where you start seeing cord.
If you need ultimate grip regardless of price and longevity, then Hoosiers are a better choice.

If you can't buy locally, try Bob Woodman. Excellent prices, they know their stuff, and they support Porsche racing (944 Cup and others).

we use them in the speed World challenge GT series. so far, it seems they are about .6 of a second slower. Thats a a track I visit more than 6 times a year, Laguna Seca!
keep in mind they have steel belts, so they are about 4lbs heavier per tire than a hoosier, so thats like 8lbs per tire because its rotating as far as accleration according to HP/weight ratios. (like carring 32lbs in the car)
I picked up a used set from speed GT world challenge, ran the to and from the tracks, and ran 2 full Speed GT pro weekends on them, also, several practice sessions with club racing, and still are in great shape, although really clean from street driving. may be in good enough shape for a 3rd SpeedGT weekend. we will see.
