Porsche 959 Photo Thread...by popular demand!
#77
The owner's mechanic (seen kneeling down by the 959) got drunk and then went for a joy ride with this 959....he was seen doing donuts in a parking lot and the police were called..... a police chase ensued (there are photos of this) .... he lost control and the car flipped over. But the story does not end there.....the mechanic "claims" that the 959 had a brake failure and that is why he could not stop! C-R-I-M-I-N-A-L!! The car is currently with the police pending inspection and litigation.
The car's owner, who i am not at liberty to discuss, is a prominent collector. I will post updates as they occur.

ps any 959 owner that would like to contact me regarding their car, please feel free to do so. I maintain a registry of all Porsche 959's and have access to parts and information.

959's at Porsche Museum - PURE ****
This photo (from left to right) shows the
(1) the 1985 959 Wind tunnel Study (Windkanal Studie) note: this was finalized in 1985, started development in 1982, this car has 408 PS, and capable of 300 km/h or 186 mph
(2) the 1983 IAA Prototype: Gruppe B Study, This car has 408 PS, capable of 300 km/h or 186 mph
and
(3) the 1985 959 production car... technically, one of the vorseries, or pre-production cars. Small detail points to the silver car being a pre-production car.. you can see it in this photo: (can anyone see why?)
This car has 450 PS and capable of 315 km/h or 196 mph
This shows how truly dynamic and amazing the 959 development was, (from left to right),
(4) the 1986 Paris-Dakar Rally winner (car #186) piloted by René Metge and co-driver Dominique Lemoyne. This car had 400 PS, and gear-limted to 210 km/h or 130 mph
and
(5) the 961 that finished the 1986 LeMans race first in class and 7th overall against cars in faster classes! (at the time of that race in 1986 it was all white, and raced with the number 180) Keep in mind that the 961 retained many of the road car mechanics including the four-wheel drive system!
Had 680 PS, capable of 340 km/h or 211 mph
Here is a photo of the 1986 LeMans car (which is the exact same car as the #203) and yes, it was competing with Group C cars to finish 7th overall piloted by René Metge and Claude Ballot-Léna:
(6) production version of the 959. This came in 3 different versions, Komfort, European-Sport, or USA-Sport. This particular one is a European-Sport Model, Rarest of the Rare. Only 8 in total produced. What made this car even rarer was that it came with the "Stage 2" upgrade (not the one that Canepa sells, and the Porsche Stage 2 system utilized the same turbos that were installed in the 961 race car). This upgrade bumped the power to 515 PS and was capable of 339 km/h or 210 mph

Yes...It's a pre-production car because it lacks the mandated headlight washing pop-up system required for production vehicles at that time!
If I win a prize as a result of correctly answering this question, pm me so I can give you my Fed Ex address...

Hans beat me fair & square. Plus he got extra points for
pointing out that the pre-production cars were lower!
I admit it. I am getting slow in my old age...
I am still hopeful that TwinTurbo959 has a second
place winner prize in his bag of tricks!

(1) different rear spoiler (changed in this pre-production car) as can be seen in this photo:
LEFT PICTURE: notice the lack of "Gurney Flap" and the thickness of the profile. note: the exhaust tips were added by Brumos Porsche
RIGHT PICTURE: production car
(2a) different wheels (missing in this pre-production car, not all pre-production car had this), and you can see in this photo. note: the hubcap on this wheel is from the production car which is why it does not fit:
(2b)the reason for this wheel was most likely to include the "brake vane":

I have also seen some 959 without left hatch for the hydraulic system. These are cars without the hydraulic suspension leveling system, aren't they?
It seems that the pre-production 1985 cars are in fact 930s, according to their VINs.
A nice example:

Yes, the "European Sport" versions did not have the hydraulic lifting system, so there was no need for the flap to give access to the filling port.
The "American Sport" 959's did not have the lifting system either and in addition, did not have the Dampening adjustment system (this was retained on the european sports).
Also, all pre-production 959's or vorseries cars, were picked off of the 930 assembly line and repurposed as prototype 959 cars...

Do you know which ones are the "Euro" sport?
I only know one of them, the red with white rims of the museum, and even this one, I don't know its VIN.
If I'm correct, this was a press car, registration S-JD 5605.
No rear seats, manual windows, one side mirror, no AC, no hydraulic suspension, ...
What a car!

if the US Sport are easy to find, wp0zzz95zjs905001 to 5029 to my knowledge (29 made), the Euro Sport are much more difficult to identify because their VINs are certainly mixed with the "regular" comfort.
The US have a complete roll cage and Autoflug harnesses.
Here is the last one produced:
