Auto blipper on sequentials
HI,
I got to use my Manthey auto blipper at Sebring for the first time. it's adjusted per instructions, 25% throttle or something like that.
But in use, it does not seem to do anything. I'm still blipping the same, it will not get the revs up enough to downshift without manually blipping. It does help a bit with timing, if I jab it just at the right time it sounds and feels good.
I am thinking of upping the amount of throttle blip, any feedback on that? Does anyone use this with NO manual blipping?
The only thing I don't like is that you really can't shift into reverse when the engine is running, grinds too much.
Some in car video to see it in action:

Mike, I had one too and basically see it like you do. Seemed like it would blip but after I already engaged the prior gear so I essentially heel and toe the whole race.
Will probably get rid of it. Sucks.

Mike I watched your "code brown" video and that was as close as it can get....all I thought of was carbon fiber/kelvar an under belly pans.
As for the autoblipper setup, TRG put one in the car for this past 24hr race because (2) of the drivers were very poor in understanding the concept of downshifting. The blipper was setup to rev to 6500-7000 rpm to help them. As a driver you still need to make the effort to blip the throttle but you have alot more room for error. Getting into reverse sucks it has to be quick, deliberate and push the pedal to the floor. People will look at you and think you are a retard reving the throttle for attention.

Mine seems to work best when adjusted right up against the throttle. The instructions call for a 3mm gap between the throttle and the blipper, but that set up sucks. Get it right on the pedal.
From there, you can adjust the throw to give you more revs. It's not perfect...

I ran one during Monday and Tuesday test days at Sebring as a trial. Took a little getting used to. If you are deliberate with the clutch timing, and delay your downshift until lower wheel speed, it works fine. If try to downshift too quickly, revs need to be much higher to match. I liked it. Allowed for more aggressive braking too. Agree is a PIA when need reverse.

Can't you have a cutoff switch when you want to select reverse?

Thanks for the feedback. Will try adjusting it closer and for higher revs and delaying the downshifting till I scrub off a bit more speed and see if that helps.
It's purely mechanical so no way to cut it off for reverse.
Kasey, did you try it with no manual throttle blips at all?

I did not do any manual blips once I got the timing down. Initially my wheel speed what too high for the blip we had set so gear engagement was chunky and rough. We increased the throttle setting and I delayed my downshifts more and it was good. I will tell you, it allowed me to put total focus on initial brake pressure without concern about getting the blip done with my foot. Over the course of a 45 minute run, the fatigue factor was less as well. You can just plant you heal on the floor board after initial brake application. Holding my heel out to blip makes my right hip sore after a long run.

Hi Mike,
I have a coaching client using one in his '06 Cup. He doesn't heel and toe at all. Initially set blipper lower, but now around 35% throttle and working well for him.
Sorry I missed saying hello at Sebring.

Thanks for the info.
Joe and Kasey, do you kill the engine before shifting into reverse? Mine grinds and won't go in when the revs go up shifting into reverse. I found some metal flakes in my tranny oil after the race but I was very careful on the track, my guess is that it's from reverse...

Good idea, it was happening mostly at our paddock so after a few sessions I gave up and just hopped out of the car and let the mechanics push the car backwards under the awning so I didn't need to use reverse.
