I doubt they will bring a diesel macan any time soon. It would be too fuel efficient and end up a halo car. As the cheapest porsche they have to be careful. Even vw didn't bring Tiguan diesel because nobody would want anything else in the range. Gas engines make them more money per unit.
Well, I wouldn't buy if not a diesel. Just me. I love my Touareg TDI. Want a Cayenne diesel for the seats and interior but need the $$ to match my Touareg as close to apple-to-apples. Even looking for certified used ones to 100k...starting to pop up now online.

That is really sad, why wouldn't any manufacturer want a halo car. VM not having a diesel Tiguan is a real shame.
This is based on what I've heard from several sources and my own guessing. They would be stupid if they didn't offer most of the Audi engines, especially the diesel engines for the European market. So I think the line-up is roughly going to look like this.
Only if the 3.0 diesel makes it here. I think it will eventually. Audi has the Q5 TDI on sale here now.
That's good to hear. I have a Q5 3.0TDI right now and I love it!! 313hp, 480ft/lbs, 0-62mph in 5.1 s and still managing 40-45mpg. Only thing that lacks is excitement in terms of engine noise, but the torque is addicting.

I agree that they won't bring the diesel engine over for a few years at least, but not with your reasoning.
VW specifically has a TDI in all their cars except the CC and Tiguan. The Tiguan with a TDI would not be a halo car for them at all. Sure it would pull some sales from a few of their other cars, but no more than the the gas version has.
I think it's more of an issue of making sure that their customers are actually interested in diesel cars. It's pretty rapidly changing (compared to the last 4 decades), but mentioning you have a diesel to most people still garners disbelief. If the CD continues to be successful I expect that the Pan will bring a diesel over with it's next model, followed by the Macan at it's facelift or second model. I also expect that the V8 TDI will make it's way over at some point (probably late this decade).
Love my Touareg diesel! As for the V8TDI coming here? I doubt it. Porsche would need Audi and VW to also offer it. Otherwise the expense to get it certified is too much.
Agree that Porsche may delay the Macan diesel for these parts but there's always a chance. CD sales are robust, which is a big positive.

They've never needed the rest of VAG for the V8 engines in the Cayenne/Pan (not to mention those wonderful flat 6s). You are correct that the initial certification is expensive, but that's why they make sure there is a market before hand.
If diesel really finally takes hold here in the US I have no doubt the CDS will make it over. It will likely be towards the end of the decade I imagine though. Much like the CD coming over, I would guess that the CDS will come over just before the facelift of the next model of the Cayenne (so basically a full model cycle from now).
Well, we each have our opinions. There is a market for diesels here primarily because of VW. To me, the reason for the diesel market expanding is simple: better mileage without sacrificing the fun factor. There is a great series of articles on this subject in the New York Times auto section...about two weeks back.
There are, of course, the enthusiasts who would crave a V8 TDI here. And it would be great but methinks there will other Diesel engines by the end of the decade that will be closer to the V8 TDI in terms of performance and will be embraced by VAG and Porsche here.
As I've said before, I would never have considered a Porsche if it weren't for the CD and the great seats that come with the Premium Plus package. VW has similar seats in Europe but not here. It's all marketing and I believe Porsche is all-in when it comes to diesel...all a matter of timing as you indicate.
Agree with you fincher. The V8 Diesel comes slowly to its end I think. It's all about downsizing, just like they're doing petrol engines. I think by the end of the decade there are 4-cil diesel engines that are more powerful, yet more economic than present 6-cil and same goes for future 6-cil diesels that will replace the V8.
I never was a fan of diesel engines, untill I drove one. Now I'm still amazed sometimes how refuned it is and how easy it delivers its power and torque, with it's almost perfect S-Tronic.
It's almost weird if you think that my 4200lbs Q5 gets nearly as quick to 62mph as my Boxster S and still gets double the mpg. (When driven at normal speeds)
i still prefer the Boxster to drive though... it's a completely different car.
I've put my name down at the local dealer to show interest... damned if I will lay a dollar down though, I want to see/drive the car first, see what engine options we get and of course pricing... if the car I want start to overlap Diesel Cayenne money then I'll just have a re-think and maybe even go back to BMW. My Diesel X5 was a great car!
