Does anyone know whether the subframe needs to be dropped to install a new transmission? My dealer is telling me that the procedures in the shop manual do call for the subframe to be dropped, thus an alignment will be necessary. I did not think the subframe needed to be disturbed at all.

no they can just drop the cross-member that connects both of the lower control arms. carl

That is what I thought as well. Here is a link to Sharkwerks’ website showing photos of the transmission out and the subframe is completely intact, except for the removable cross member.

http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/987-ca...mance-kit.html

I just sent the link to the dealer. Will see what the response will be. I really want to avoid having the subframe removed if possible, as the alignment on the car is already setup how I want it and the car is corner balanced as well. I wonder why the Porsche shop manual calls for removing the subframe.

I should drive the car in 3rd gear the entire time for 1 month just so I can get a new transmission and put this failure behind me

Do it, and report back when it doesn't break...

I have just been informed by my dealer that there are no transmissions in the US right now and I have to wait for a shipment to arrive from Germany. No ETA has yet been provided.

Does anyone know if Porsche will honor the tranny replacement if the 3rd gear fails when the factory warranty runs out? I ask because I've seen other manufacturers replace items out of warranty when there was a service bulletin previously issued.

I would be shocked if they didn't, but that's still about two years away, so you still have time.
