can someone confirm that the part number on the 15&16 s are the same. if so maybe all are the same and just some welds are failing. if in fact the 15s had a spline( which at this point seems to be speculation) you would think there would be a different part number. correct?

The 20160713 PET shows the replacement transmission as part 981 300 020 22.
Since most of the failures are from 2016 production (mooty and orthojoe had 2015 failures), and we have not to my knowledge seen internal pictures with a splined third, you could be right that all are EB welded and just the latter production had a weaker weld.
It could instead be that Getrag made a running change and didn't tell Porsche, and therefore replacement 981 300 020 22 is either splined or welded depending on when it was made.
Replacement 981 300 020 23 could either be splined or a stronger weld, thanks to Porsche's silence we just don't know.

At this point someone (independent) who has opened-up a gearbox should chime in and settled this; Splined or welded? GT Gears where are you?

They ( GTgears) did. Either this transmission thread or the other. The gear was pulled from sharkwerks car and it was EB welded.

I'll be adding a friend's 3rd gear failure to the spreadsheet. This person prefers to remain anonymous.

March 2016 build (they were not positive) and approx 10,000+ miles
Didn't give track miles which I"ll find out before I put it on the spreadsheet.

Right, but has there been a GT4 transmission that's been opened to find a splined 3rd?

We have replaced about 2 dozen gearsets on GT4s at this point and all 3rds have been welded. But none of these cars have had a replacement gearbox in them.

I'm about to make a new batch of gears because Sharky keeps selling them all. I am going to make half a dozen stock ratio for guys who are tired of gambling.

in that case its a bad batch of welds not a design change from splined

I took a look at my Certificate of Authenticity and the actual production date for my car was 10/14/2015. 12,000 miles and no issues.

From your comment that all the gears you removed were welded. Maybe I misunderstood ?

what makes you think ANY of the gear boxes are splined 3rd gear? Failures encompass nearly all months of production and both years ('15&'16).

I would find it odd Porsche (getrag) offered two different versions of the box (increased cost). I'd wager all are EB welded.
