I don't see the point in analysing the minutae. Porsche likely didn't know Getrag changed the manufacturing technique. We will likely never know when the change took place. There have been minor changes to these boxes over the years that are never referenced anywhere, like the change of ring gear bolts somewhere during the 987.2 production.
My original advice is still what I think. Drive the car. If it breaks make them fix it for you. Don't lose sleep.

It doesn't look like a normal weld. It's an EB weld. Blow the picture up really big on your computer and look down in the crack between the gear and the dog.

It is confirmed that early 981S box's (not 987) had 3rd gears that were splined not welded and it is not known when the change took place?

Some more pics of gears. Not sure which gear this is (5th?) but I wanted to show that the synchro teeth on this gear DO NOT overhang like 3rd does:
I think this is 3rd gear - and the synchro teeth do overhang (which Matt suggested might make them more fragile):

Great thread.
Everyones learning and sharing.
As long as Porsche throws parts under warranty at cars in a reasonable time frame, all is good.
Keep the car stock enough to not have to fight for warranty while the experts get ready to keep the cars on track with better improved parts for when the warranty runs out.
