^Might be a "people not driving hard" problem.. I hope this isn't due to the C&C movement....

Another 3rd gear failure
Hello all. I'm new to Porsche and Rennlist but not to the car obsession. Picked up my Cayman GTS new in June (one of the last allocations around; wanted the NA flat 6 and 6 speed). On my 11th track day and about 6300 miles I was at NCM Motorsports Park in KY and shifted from 2nd to 3rd but.... no 3rd, just revs. The shifter went into the gate no problem, but nobody home. 2nd and 4th ok. I made it home about 450 miles and brought to my purchasing dealership after I cleaned all the rubber off and put on my street tires (I felt I didn't need to flaunt my track use with a major repair needed, and I had no service history with them until now). I did admit to track use when asked. No major incidents in the car before this; I am about 100 track days in, all in manual cars, never had this problem before. All track days have been on stock 19" sized Bridgestone RE71Rs.
They made a video of the problem and sent it to Germany and a new transmission was just installed yesterday under full warranty coverage. I asked the service writer if there have been any modifications to the trans to prevent this from happening again but he reported that it is the same unit. Hopefully this will not happen again but I have every intention of tracking it again next summer...
Just another data point.

I have a Spyder and done 2 track days at 2 sort of radically different tracks. I like to think I am a smooth driver with mechanical sympathy. My car is bone stock other than an aggressive (as much as possible with X73 suspension alignment). My car has done 3k miles so far. Did any of the folks who have had failed transmission experience transmission crunches when the cars had very low miles (think hundreds) when shifting from 1st to 2nd? I did but after driving relatively aggressively (only when fluids are warmed up) do I find that the crunch has disappeared. It was there at first when I was babying it. I have not had a Porsche before so I do not know about reliability of Porsches. But this is definitely concerning which leads me to my question of - did the failed transmission folks experience any gear crunchiness before?

As I previously posted, my suspicion is that this is a problem with a single part in a batch. The failures seem to confirm this since almost all of them are the 3rd gear synchro teeth breaking and falling off the gear. My best guess would be an issue with heat treat and them being too brittle. As Ruminator has shown, this isn't a GT4 specific problem. This is a 981S gearbox (G81 is what I think they call them now)problem that likely effects cars across all spec levels.
I agree with Mooty's take on it. Drive it. No problem until/unless it fails. I doubt there is any internal data telling Porsche/Getrag where the problem starts and ends.
