I went through this thread and came up with 13 failures? Is that correct ? Not sure if I got them all?

So, no - GT4 & Spyder do NOT have the same transmission as regular Boxsters and Caymans. One revision number different.
I think that is only lsd versus non-lsd. Or are those non-S part numbers? The non-S cars have a different 3rd gear ratio.

new is about $10k. this one is much less. i know of only one for sale in USA.
Thanks Mooty but the dealership will replace it for free... they should have it within the next 4 weeks... That gets me a replacement Macan and an additional year of warranty on the car. I'm just not confident the car can handle repetitive track days...

Don't kill the messenger. I've gotten to the bottom of this with some help from Sharkwerks and BGB. There is a design change and not for the better. I'll post pictures tonight from my hotel room.

Morning gents. Sorry for the delayed response. Mooty took me out for Thai food last night and I food coma'd when I got back to my room.

Anyway, here's the rub. I've been saying that these gearboxes are a decade old and even the 3rd gear ratio is the same. But there is a change. Below is the current gt4 gear. This came out of Sharkwerks mule with less than 1000 miles on it. See the welds?

Memory suggested that only 5&6 were welded in the 987 and 3&4 were splined like 915 or gt3 gears. So I rang John Teece and asked him to check. He confirmed for me.

So what's causing the failures? The welds are breaking and the ring is spinning right off the gear.

Thanks for sharing this, Matt. It makes you wonder why Porsche changed a formula that had worked for many years. Unfortunately, I think we know the answer.

According to my information, only the 2016 GT4 have the transmission problem. Is this correct or did somebody suffer the damage with a 2015 manufactured car?

Bummer. So it sounds less like a batch failure and more like an inherent weakness. Wonder if use and tire type is or will have an affect on GT4 vs Spyder failure rates, assuming all else is roughly equal.

Also, a bit disturbing to see such a failure so early on, and in quantity.

Thanks, for this, Matt.

So, would a 3rd gear swap with one of your aftermarket gears negate this issue?

To continue the play by play, or "What one can expect when third gear goes away" I've been told a new transmission will be stateside 11/7. SA guesstimates they will receive the transmission about one week after that. Then it needs to be installed. Dealership became aware of the problem 10/25. So if my experience is typical the repair takes 3-4 weeks.

so the regular 981 box 3rd is splined ? you make a reference to the 987 gear box being splined but not the 981 . Is it only the gt4 /spyder box that 3rd is welded ?
