vid is great to see, but the music overload was unbearable, would have been better to hear the car and talking alone

I don't want to speak for anyone, but I think generally the answer is "the shop makes no guarantees neither express nor implied re: emissions, and once the car leaves their possession they assume zero responsibility regarding your state and local laws"

Basically some folks have squeaked them past smog, but if people keep blowing it up online the minders might take notice and the music could come to a stop.

As far as I know progress on the 718 4.5L is ongoing, so I'm sure Rick will start a thread over there when he has something substantial to report.

If I stubbornly believe that the X51 heads and cams are not worth it for the price (most gains are in the GT3RS/718 CS IM), can you guys completely reuse the stock heads and just convert the bottom end to 4.5L? I’m not looking to squeeze every ounce of power at the top end since I find hefty low end torque more fun driving to work legally

I believe that is exactly what’s done anyway… existing heads are reworked for flow (ported and polished) and then it’s the bottom end as you described, custom crank and the intake.

Happy to be corrected.

There are "some" X51 parts used.

When I asked Rick about a quote way back before I changed cars entirely, the conversion cost was lower because I already had an X51 engine.

Do you ask the chef to change the recipe to try and save a few bucks on your meal?

How would a 718 GT4 be like with the 4.5l engine but with OEM 6 speeds? Even higher top speed? What else?

Top speed is dictated by gearing, not power. You'd need a taller 6th to get at a higher vmax.

AFAIK the gearboxes between the 981 and 718 GT4s are virtually the same—@Luca Paindelli has had both stock gears and DeMan gears in his 981 4.5L, so gearbox-wise his experience might be informative.

I see. Thanks for the reply.

I was planning to get the 992 GT3 in Manual. I guess the 4.5L Cayman does shine over the GT3 in most aspects with an exception of the 911 heritage and status. I want this car to be the car that you drive for the sake of driving pleasure. Therefore, it has to be a manual car.

I just had a looked at the website. The Vmax of the 4.5L + DeMan gearing is at 194 mph. I wish it does break the 200mph barrier but hey I rarely go over 300kmh (186mph).
Out of curiosity, is it possible to stretch or modify the gearing ratio to surpass the 200 mph line while keeping the similar driving behaviour of DeMan gear ratio? I'd love to go to DeMan but I am not in the US + Covid 19
How would the car behave if the 6th gear was longer other than the increased top speed?

I don't know much about modding gearing. I just drive.

As for the 718 vs 981 GT4

Is the clutch on the 718 lighter? Is the car required to be upgraded with a new clutch to handle the 4.5L power?
