Thanks for the replies all! Always impressed with the knowledge and willingness to help available on Rennlist. I'm going to mull my options over for a while.

Default Cooling Issues?

Does Deman use a larger radiator to handle the added heat that comes from increasing horsepower? Is there any problem with the 4.5L GT4 running hot on track?

Looks like the 718 GT4s have connecting rod recall for their 4.0L engines. Porsche should take notes on how bigger displacement engines are done from Rick

Temps have been around 195-203°F in my experience, so really no hotter than stock; the cooling system that comes standard on the GT4 is really exceptional.

Nothing in the radiator upfront. When building the engine, you can ask Rick to include a larger heat exchanger for the engine oil (the engine oil is cooled by engine coolant, not through it's dedicated oil to air heat exchanger) but it's not part of the standard build since it's not needed for regular driving. I believe the upgraded oil-coolant heat exchanger options adds a couple of rows: Rick showed me the two side by side and the upgrade is some 15-20mm taller.

Agree there are other factors to consider in addition to displacement. 718cs 3.8l > 718 GT4/Spyder>GTS 4l for example.

Disagree with the statement that there's not a lot to be had by going beyond 4l. Characterizing the differences in the engine builds based just on displacement while factual I felt was misleading since it doesn't reflect what people actually buy and experience. When someone buys a 4.5l build it does include other things and those other things aren't always applicable to another lower displacement build. For example, throw a GT3 intake on a stock 3.8 and you might lose so much torque across the range that you're better off with stock. On the other hand, throw that same intake on a 4.5l and it'll be a great increase over the stock manifold. In that example, you are not only getting an increase in performance from the displacement but also from intake enhancements which might not otherwise have been effective at the lower displacement.

I think you know this but it's helpful for folks to understand these are engine builds, not displacement kits like for a sbc, so there is both increased displacement AND increased power/l. Therefore I don't see it as a matter of this is bigger than that (e.g. intake is worth more than displacement) but more different builds where these things come together for best performance.

FWIW, Matt Farrah was just discussing the 4.5 on his podcast w/Jonny Lieberman, and he had your review that's up on DeMan's site on his screen (so viewers could see). Podcast is streaming live right now, audio and on youtube, but will probably not be available again for a few days. This was in advance of the Hagerty video he made on a DeMan car/shop. Of note, he said, "It's difficult to show a car's speed on film, without sending it sideways/drifting...he didn't have this problem with the 4.5". He also said it was spinning tires in 3rd at like 90mph.

I can’t justify spending $160k + ADM for the 992 GT3 when the 4.5L can still whip it

Hell, I was set on a 991.2 GT3 but seeing them go at or above MSRP now is pushing me further towards a 4.5L.

The used market hurts my brain seeing that a full 4.5L build would still put me ahead of a 991.2 by at least $20k...

Porsche can’t seem to get the 4.0L connecting rods right on the 718s and with the 992 GT3 being astronomical in price (the ADM could be the price of the DeMan conversion!), 4.5L is the only logical progression

FWIW again, during the latest "Crew Show" podcast, a viewer question came in towards the end, asking crew for their "top 5 engines ever". They agreed to cut the list to "Top 2", for time constraints...guess what Matt picked? May be some recency bias, but given what he's driven (1500hp Bugatti last month), both stock and modded, and currently owns, that's saying something.
