Poll is for what people consider the best Porsche, in their opinion. If people can't be objective and prefer to think of their own car as best, so be it. But c'mon people, we all know a 959 or Carrera GT is better than a 928...

Best Porsche versus Favorite Porsche?/ Two totally different things IMHO

Yeah - but the majority of the worlds population will never be able to afford a CGT or 959 - unless your Jerry Seinfeld?.

Yes-I admit it, I'd trade my sharks for a CGT!!!!

Thats a wicked 928 that hangs w/the big boys of mucho $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Regardless - Porsches are cool no matter which one you drive!
Not knocking the performance of 928's or 911's at all. But based on your criteria, the only sports cars Porsche has produced are the 928 and Cayenne TT.

If performance, stance, weight distribution, brakes and rumble were the criteria, the WRX STI fits the bill nicely.

Seriously, most Porsche have been the sportiest cars of their era, Cayenne excluded.

sorry my liquid cooled friends,

I'm betraying our breed and voting 993 because the RS 3.8, Clubsport, Turbo and GT2 had big improvements over the problems encountered on the earlier 911s; not to mention it was the pinnacle of the air-cooled evolution. And I really really really want an RS 3.8 Clubsport...

Although if it was on there, the 996 GT2 would have been my choice for best Porsche honestly

Andy

It certainly does look like a frenzy. But...

The thread title is "Best Porsche Ever?"

You use the phrase "be objective."

What is the context of 'objective?"

At what is a 959 or C-GT better than any other Porsche?

Racing? Then my vote would go to the 917/30 as campaigned by Mark Donahue.

Ahead-of-its-time technological tour de force? 959

Most expensive Porsche I'd not want to own unless I worked at Zuffenhausen? Carrera GT.

"Sportiest?" most "fun?" 986S

Truest to the nameplate? 964

Best evolved? 993

Best at seperating owners from cash? 924 Turbo

Best all-around blend of form and function? 928

Default 928 was the best ever?

I want the best, so I think I'll donate my 993 to charity and buy a 928.

If I were some of you guys, I would be wondering why the 928 guys seem so obsessed and in love with their cars. We're not crazy, ignorant or irrational, so there must be something more to it.
Maybe make a point of driving one if you haven't, spend as much time in the saddle as possible. Get in a GT or GTS or 5 speed and see what you find.
The GTS was $90k+ when it was discontinued...do you really think Porsche would design a car from scratch and sell it for that kind of money and it would suck? Don't be prejudiced and pontificate from ignorance. I dare those who haven't to drive a 928.

p.s. "Old Guy"- what are you doing riding a 250F mx bike if you are a power junkie? I'll sell you one of my tweaked CR500AFs. That'll cure 'ya!

Carl, good thing you didn't add 'obsessed' to that list of things we're not.

Opps. You did use 'obsessed'

Guess that means this 928 owner has gone blind due to the Grid Girls thread.

Carl The 250 f is the new 4 stroke MX bike. It has the 4th generation Al frame. It has more than enough power on a MX track plus it the lightest MX bike in Hondas lineup.Thats a big plus for an OldGuy. A CR 500 is a widow maker. Plus there is no class for it now. I am into supsension now, so that I can.. uhm land successfully. Thats more important now.

Dave Best form and function of them all??!! come on maybe if your talking Lexus or infinti or BMW but we are talking Porsches here REAL sports cars! not luxurious touring cars.
In 1950 Porsche was making the predessesor to the 911- the 356. 54 years later that lineage is still being made. There are all kinds of other cars that came and went. 912, 914, 924, 928,944, 968. Boxster. Yet the 911 still arouses the knowledgeable public. But there is one thing the 928 did better than any other Porsche. It depreciated faster than any other car Porshce made. I think the Best overall form and function sports car in the history of the company known for form and function would have held its value better.
But hey thats just my demented opinion.

The 959 is my all-time favorite! It was my childhood dreamcar, and the rest of the world is just now catching up to its technological brilliance!

Old Guy,

Whilst you keep on refering to, and stressing, "sports" cars, you keep overlooking one vital point:

This poll is not just about 'sports cars', and Porsche didn't only make 'sports cars'...

I drive 1,000 kilometers each week, effortlessly in my 928s daily driver, and arrive each day not only in a timely manner, but also refreshed and at ease, yet with still enough adrenalin pumping from a couple of sorties along the way...

And at the monthly local Porsche Club meets, the 928's are unbowed in the mix...

The 928 is not a 'sports car'. But neither is it shamed by them. And it sure as Hell is one comfortable performance car, and Porsche through and through...

(And here in the Tropics, it sure is easier to keep cooled...)

Overall, I probably agree that the Poll should have addressed 'favourite', rather than 'best'. We're all comparing too many disparate apples with too great a variety of oranges, and they're all top quality fruits...

But, oh... Am I PASSIONATE about my Shark...!!!

Cheers, cousin,

Phill.
