This is a serious job once the failures occurs! One side of the variocam failed and I ended up with two intake bent valves. They tore the engine down (w/o removing it) and sent the head out for tanking, installation of the new valves and reseating the remaining valve. They said the engine is not an interference engine but with some carbon build-up on the piston and the valve they will hit and bend. I am a little concerned that one side is cleaned-up and lightly refreshed while nothing on the other side. Time will tell. Hopefully i will have it back next week!!

Interesting they could R&R the head without engine removal. Wonder how they got the timing chain gallery cover off - or if they took it off. I suspect some of the difference may be mine is a turbo.

I think it would have been better if both sides were cleaned up - at least on the intake valves. That's where the crud buildup occurs since there is no fuel going past to help remove carbon that forms on the back of the valve.

As can be seen by the photos above - my dealer left nothing to chance.. they wanted to be certain that there was no additional damage.

Yeah I can expect they did.

Going in to it three times would make somebody's head roll. Maybe a couple of somebody's.

I have a Cayenne 2017 courtesy car but nothing like having your own car...

Well i finally got my CS back today. Everything seems good and all the costs were covered by Porsche including the tow.

Question on when this was a known issue for early 958.1's...
(I have a 2012 CTT btw)...

Per this FS ad here on RL,... also confirming this owner is calling it a Porsche "Cam Tensioner Update"..

My surprise is that Porsche knew about this back in the year 2013 and performed this "update" to this 2011 CTT. The date is what surprised me. I would have figured that if Cam bolts needed replacing back in 2013 (on a 2011), that it would have been a failure that caused the knowledge-of, and need-for an "update".

Steve, it's not clear what your question is. When did Porsche know there was an issue? Probably in late 2011 when they changed the bolt design. They didn't do that just for fun. They announced a recall in China by 2012. What's the date on WC-22 (I'm on vacation and don't have a copy handy..)

Doesn't really matter to me as long as I'm reimbursed for my expense in proactively doing the job.

Steve, ask for a copy of the service order that involves the cams. He says "cam chain tensioner" which isn't Variocam..

Our local rep told Porsche of the Village the recall parts are not available. I voiced my concerns about continuing to tow with my CS. Reply was to keep receipts of towing, hotels, etc for reimbursement.

Further- I was told that repairs currently being done by dealers, at least here locally, are being made with the old hardware. The recall kits are not yet available- expected 10/17. Those cars that have been repaired with the old bolts will have to be redone.

I just called Porsche NA - my car (2011 Cayenne S) is confirmed as being affected. They didn't have me in their system as an owner since I bought used from an Acura dealer, but am now registered.

She said the parts are now "being ordered" and I would be receiving an email to contact the dealer when they're available. I asked whether she thought "weeks or months?" She "hoped weeks" which I guess tallies with 10/17 above .

Thanks to all who researched and documented this - huge service to the rest of us.

I received the letter yesterday.

It says the parts are not yet available but once they are they'll contact me. But unfortunately no sense of timing around that statement so we'll see...

Does anyone know when they started using the better bolts at the factory? After 9.2011?

Thanks
