Default Full size spare for off-road fun

I have my '11 Cayenne set up for moderate off-roading and would like to continue to enjoy its capabilities. The inflatable spare may allow you to limp home but surely a full-size spare would be advisable for anything remote. I have seen a few of the hitch mounted options (Rigd) but these seem bulky and expensive for occasional use. Has anyone rigged something up in the trunk to carry a full size spare? Maybe against the passenger side in the trunk using the tie downs. Another idea would be to drill through the tailgate and mount one there, probably paired with converting the lift gate to manual. Anybody done anything cool here?

Cheapest route is to just throw a spare in the trunk face down, and tie it down. Put a jack and other equipment in the wheel. The wheel is too tall to mount vertically; the factory mounting solution in the right rear is still for the collapsible spare.

If you need the trunk for other stuff, the next cheapest option is to just fabricate your own tire holder using the hitch mount. With around $50 in metal from your local IMS, you can have a pretty nice rigid mount for a full spare. If you have no fab/welding skills, then the Hitchgate solo high clearance version works nicely on the Cayenne, and it is fairly easy to take on and off when not in use. And you can likely sell it when you don't want it anymore, recouping a lot of the $1100+ cost.

Drilling the tailgate for a mount should be the last thing to consider!

Run a search (here and on the Google 9000 machine) for Oits. A couple built a CD for Time-Speed-Distance rallies and I believe, had a spare tire carrier fabbed for their Cayenne. It may give you some ideas on what's possible and what it looks like.

Thank you, I have read about Otis before but this was a great refresher and there is some good discussion of another hitch mounted option, Wilco Hitchgate, on page 8 of this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-...et-otis-8.html

Thanks for your insight. What is the factory mounting solution in the right rear you mentioned here?

You could also mount it on an expedition roof rack...but that would take up a good amount of the total rack load capacity, and be a huge PITA to get up and down...

I think he just means the factory space-saver spare can continue to live where it lives.

There's a mount and cover, and different floor plate, for the interior mounted collapsible spare tire option:

Default As promised

floor plate that is underneath spare wheel is metal. In space where “spare” would normally go there is a Bose subwoofer that is factory fitted

Was just digging into this to compare the in-trunk option to a Rig’D UltraSwing. Here are the complete diagrams (English version) for…

The trunk mount/cover

The alternative floor liner…
