High mileage V8s - Timing Chain - It's only a matter of time
Heres my original tensioner next to the ebay pneumatic tensioner. Looks to be the same thread pitch.
So i went full ghetto on this and installed a Schrader valve and used my hand held electric pump to get it up to pressure. Worked just fine given that its such a small volume of air its displacing!
P.S if you are in the states i am happy to send you my full kit for the cost of shipping (as long as you return it once you are done). im pretty sure i can get it to fit in a large flat rate USPS box.
EDIT; OR if you just want me to send you the tensioner, PM me your address!

It's been a while since I did mine, but I think I had to replace the fitting with a more standard quick release type fitting which you've done. Also, late on the conversation and I see you've already figured out the mismatched threads, but I sourced my camshaft kit from a seller on Amazon and was around $100 at the time. I see another post from DemonBG with a very cool idea of using a Shrader tire valve to hold the pressure there. Like it!

I'm a manufacturing engineer by profession which I think gives me some (small) credibility here - But to my eye Aliexpress part and the original i compared it to seemed identical which is why i ended up using it.
It sure did! Funnily enough I did record a comparison video of the Aliexpress part and the OE part and documented why i believe they are identical. At some point i may post it up somewhere.

Thanks for your tip about the part you used; $25 vs even the $90 Elring Klinger aftermarket version is a nice savings!
demon, i am new to this so excuse me if i am not following the correct protocol. i read and followed your posts and bob958s about timing chain service on cayenne.
you guys have the most helpful detailed info for doing this job at a reasonable cost. my 2009 957 is i believe very similar and i wanted to reach out to you for some guidance before i tackle this.
1 can i get by just replacing the guides and tensioner and clean up the adjuster solenoids? would save a lot of work and dollars in cost.
2 if i go for the full chain replacement, do you have a cheaper source for the kit? and the timing cover gasket set like you got on the crankshaft seal?
yes, i know with 237,000 miles and poor prior owner maintenance, i probably should do chain BUT everything i have seen the chain and sprockets are still good and they all have worn and destroyed guides, tensioners and adjuster solenoids that result in the extreme play. mine showing 21 degree variation bank 1 BUT after multiple crank attempts finally starts, idles rough BUT runs great.
any details or insights appreciated before i proceed.

Hi, I am doing this job right now.
Could you give me advice on how to pry off the timing chain cover? I am like 90% sure I have all the screws out.
I don't need to remove the water pump, right?
Is there a specific place to pry it off.
Thank you, excellent write up. Dealer quoted me $10k to do the job. I am going to pull it off.

I was calling the dealer today to order a new set of screws to hold on the timing chain cover. and they were talking about how there was a major service bulletin on the screws that hold the upper timing chain cover on on both sides because they were breaking. Mine were definitely broken the top two screws on both sides.
Here’s my theory, think about the rotation of the timing chain when those screw screws holding the timing cover to the cylinder head brake they’re gonna allow dirt and contamination to enter. Which will then be carried directly to the U shaped tensioner possibly causing accelerated wear and failure.
Just a theory.

hello all, whats the consensus on when to do the timing chain kits? Wait for an engine vibration/rattle, or CEL/codes that are related to this issue, or just do it proactively on high mileage V8 cayenne's with over 120k miles? I have a 2013 Cayenne S with 131k miles. I dont hear any rattles or weird noises coming from the engine bay yet, and no codes either, but I dont want to risk it, so im thinking of doing this proactively. You think its ok to wait until I get one of the symptoms, or can this problem grenade the engine all of a sudden with no symptoms present?
