I purchased the Timing Cover Gasket Set, Timing Chain Kit, and Crankshaft Seal from FCP Euro. Part numbers and prices shown below. I don't know of any alternate chain guides where the plastic (phenolic) is any different or better/worse. As for alternate chains, I'm not personally familiar with any. IWIS seems to have a very good reputation. They are German based and show OEM for several name brand auto manufacturers. I see a HEPU on eBay HEPU - Timing Chain Kit. Looks identical to the IWIS kit from FCP except for the tensioner. I posted earlier that I actually like the tensioner that comes in the kit from FCP over OEM --- tensioner works hydraulically and the oil filler hole is slightly larger than OEM.
If you look at part of this posting thread on 12-14-2021, 05:52 PM,..you'll see where I noted the IWIS parts look to be OEM Porsche, but the part numbers are scratched off for some weird reason.
This FCP Euro part number - Porsche Engine Timing Chain Kit - IWIS 90001148KT is probably the best buy (as of today $1115.74). You get the cover gasket set, the crank seal, cam sprocket bolts, and crank harmonic balancer bolt included.
i got today a quote on parts from Porsche Zagreb (where the car was delivered and maintained before) with 2000€ incl tax. I found a french site (rosepassion) where I got the price up to around 1200 €. It seams as they sell parts from porsche.
I will see with my indy what to order as gaskets i can order also cheaper ones and if the chain is iwis i can order also iwis chain. No need to give porsche 700€ for the chain as the iwis chain on ebay is 150€.
i dont want to cheap out but i dont want to pay 3x more for the same thing. Rather spend that money to change the oil in the diffs.
also i want to do this right and proper and when i drive it to the indy i want to have it done as fast as possible - dont want to let the car there for weeks. Porsche is to be driven not to be parket as my dads 928s4
Finally got around to doing the timing chain and guides over the Easter weekend. What a job!! Not terrible (the hardest part for me was removing the crank bolt... That sucker is on there TIGHT) but with the radiator fan removed there is PLENTY of space to do the work!
I also used the IWIS kit and can confirm it is the original parts with the all the ID markings removed. Whats more, I saved about $100 buying this crankshaft seal from Aliexpress (About $20 shipped vs $130 from US) and again can confirm it is the original BRUSS one: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32568...andl_shipto=US
I was skeptical at first but came to the conclusion that nobody is tooling up to make a knock-off of something like this to sell it for $20. Sure enough when i received it, it is identical in every way to the original.
Anyway - I did record lots of short videos of critical steps and how to approach them. I will need to edit them and stitch it all together but think i have enough to put together a step-by-step.
For now, glad its done and it didn't explode on me!
Thank you all for the support and especially @Bob958S !
Hi, just finished the timing chain. Did it myself. Bigest issue was the crankshaft bold. Had to remove the bumper and unscrew half of the front to get enough space for an impact.
ive looked both chains and thei are the same size- so no chain stratch but the U glide was completly broken. Also the part on the chaintensioner got a big crack.
only problem i fu*ked up the wiring for the front crash sensor. I got it together but it seams that i missed the pinout.
had the famouse p0016 code. After half a year it went from intermitten to all the time with psm-cel.
then i checked with a little camera and saw that the glide was missing the plastic. (Picture is more up in the thread).
edit: oh the millage is now 244 400 km but the light came first on at around 230 000 km

when I did this years ago on my 540i I had to use 3/4 breaker bar and about a six foot cheater to break it loose...and I welded up a simply hub mount to lock the crankshaft..
congrats!

Alright, Team! Got a question for all of you timing chain mechanics in the house:
Every kit I see on eBay has a pneumatic tensioner that has the incorrect thread pitch. Fortunately I noticed this before I went nuts screwing it in...
Where did you all source the proper pneumatic tensioner tool? Thank you!
And what hose fitting did you fit to their oddly shaped silver fitting? I replaced it with a standard industrial fitting, but I'm curious what hooks up to that silver fitting.
