Default Otis Porsche

Prepping Otis for the start of the winter off-road rally season -
The Totem Rally is next - snow and ice covered logging roads Between Cache Creek and 100 Mile House, BC, Canada.
Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8s will go on as soon as studded tires are legal - four on the ground and two full sized spares.
Blue filters for the aux lights will be next to go back on.

I have 4mm spacers but I also don’t have stock brakes (I went larger - 8 pot + 16” disc)

Just a heads-up for those of you who are getting the CTT wet. Not so much for you desert rock-crawler types.

Let's say you high-center the car in some deep muddy ruts (as I did) and the wheels don't have any traction AND are submerged in water.

If the CTT throws an ABS fault (mine actually threw a brake proportioning fault, which was odd) then you lose all of the e-diff capability. You will be totally stuck because now you have completely open front and rear diffs with no ability for the car's brakes to grab the spinning wheel and give you traction.

Once the car was hauled out, all the codes for ABS/PSM/Air Suspension etc cleared within a minute of driving on dry land. But, for that moment when it was stuck with wet and dangling wheels, it was helpless without the locking diffs it so desperately needed.

BTDT and I can confirm. I used the parking brake once with success but now I try to carefully choose my track and not high center the pig as it’s a chore to get out.

A toyota hilux once tried to pull me out of mud with a bungee rope - the cayenne stayed in place and he bounced back like a yoyo...

As a heads up for 958 owners, we carry a set of self recovery boards called Maxtrax all the time, on or off-road. Especially useful with winter coming on. A good inside storage place is the tailgate. We found that with the tapered side facing out, these will fit side to side also giving you a 'fence' so anything loose in the tailgate will not fall out. There are other cheaper brands out there that do not work well. Maxtrax are stout enough to be used as a bridge, yes they will support the weight of a Cayenne.

We were high centered in snow several years ago, our Maxtrax worked well as a shovel and a traction board.

Self-recovery is a good thing whether on or off-road.

I used to work at Local Motors, we made the Rally fighter. It's this ridiculously awesome thing:

We carried MaxTrax. They work.

cheers,

Off the pavement photo-op at a (frozen) gravel pit today.
Not very challenging....but good enough for a thread bump.

Also carry Maxtrax as a last resort recovery, and agree they are way better than other recovery boards.

While we are at, the 957 if you put a the wheels off the ground, will give a suspension error that can stop you locking the diffs. Equally frustrating. This means if we beach it on dune, and then want to try locking the diff (through low range), you can't. Recovery only is then the option.

Default At Pismo just after Xmas

A quick trip south to the central coast to play in the dunes on rental ATVs with the boys.. Fun!

Parked the P!G out there by itself.

Went to take a look at a cabin in the woods, forgot to take a pic when the light was still good...

It was mostly muddy, some frozen mud, some snow & ice with some rock crawling thrown in - the pig performed like a champ. The new tires I've got are perfect.

lupo.sk I've got a set of sport technos I'm trying to put some 20" off-road tires on. The 958 doesn't fit as big of a tire, apparently. What tire do you have on yours?
